smaller case. restore engines
This is my first posting. I'm kinda lost. I found this engine at a salvage yard. Had to have it. Frozen up. Disassembled it. Just mainly time was its demise. Looking for advice on what it is and where I can find parts. I am trying to post pictures and hope someone can help out. I'm told its a pony motor.

Welcome!

I don't know what you have there. If you google "Mayer Carburetors, Buffalo NY" there is info about them and what they were used on.

Went there first. Lead me to a model t. The plate on the side of the engine is blank. Has casting numbers GM57 ON IT. Is water cooled with no water pump. Thus the pony motor theory. Looks like a 1911 casting. Someone welded counter weights to the crank. Has me perplexed but so determined to hear it run
I'll keep posting as it progresses. Thanks

It looks like it might be an inboard marine engine made by Mayer. Interesting because it has a closed crankcase and timing gears, but otherwise looks like a one lunger from the 1920s. Here's a link that might help:

Mystic Seaport: ENGINES

Can you free it up, or is it too stuck? After soaking the piston and cylinder with solvent for a good amount of time, you might replace the head and "hydraulically" force the piston with a grease gun adapted to the spark plug hole.

It's really fun to get the old iron running again. You can devise a quickie ignition system with a Model T coil, a battery and a simple point set of a wire touching a spot on the flywheel or cam lobe. It's also not too hard to pour bearings in the garage. They can actually be poured in place against a crankshaft that has been carboned up on it's surface. A pine stick browns at the right pour temperature.

Fun stuff.

Welcome to TBN. That's a neat old engine and it will be fun to watch you bring it back to life.
