I posted on my 1600 alittle while ago about being hard to start and having to use either to start it. Well I put new diesel in it and new glow plug's but it doesn't start any better. What is the best way to test glow plug's? I checked the volt's going to them and it started at about 8 and went to about 10.50 volts, the little heater on the dash work's now . Bought a Chinese compression gauge and did a check, back cyl, 450lb's front 400 lb's. pretty good because it's only suppose to have around 390 psi.new look's like I got what I paid for. I read a post on here about cylinder's glazing over due to not working them hard enough so I put a 5 ft. brush hog on it and made a few pass's in grass about 2 to 3 ft. high no thick brush . I realise that hog is to big for this little tractor but I figured it was a good way to work it. I had the motor smoking black & blue and white plus some blowby out the vent. I ran her in 2 & 3rd gear in low range it was pretty slow going. I will say it might be starting alittle easier I can start it without a shot of the can now with enough grinding of the starter, might be that I just getting my starting technigue down. Mark

If it were my lil tractor doing this I would first check the fuel delivery systems throughly Including the fuel filter. There are often filters located in the tank and near the fuel pump/injector or what have you. Confirming good fuel flow is important for reliaable startups, especially for a diesel engine.

Here is a link I found with a quick google search regarding diesel smoke and what it could mean in varying circumstances. It is often helpful in pinpointing a starting problem.

Free Advice for Diesel Owners.

I had the motor smoking black & blue and white plus some blowby out the vent.

blowby of what? oil! fuel! and which vent does it eminate from?

Try to note when you are getting the various exhaust colors, this will help you diagnose the problem.

Well Jae it has a new fuel filter assembly on it with the clear bowl so you can see any crap in the fuel. I had the injecter's tested at the Ford dealer they said they were ok. The person I bought it off of said he thought the fuel pump timing was off I haven't checked that yet. Since I don't have a good quality compression gauge I can't tell were my my comp. is but the way it smoke's I would have to think it's down on comp. I think i'll do a leak down test on it . It smoke's out of the breather coming out of the valve cover telling me weak comp. If the pump timing is off that would explain some of the smoke coming out of the exhaust, thank's for your input Jae . Mark

a little input is about all I can offer..

I was thinkink of the similarities to your starting problem versus a similar problem I was having with my Ford F250 7.3 Diesel truck. It was often hard to start at first but after the first cold start it would fire normally. I noticed as I cranked it that white smoke would come out of the exhaust pipe. I had to use ether to start it as well. Turned out to be the glow plug relay which wasn't staying on long enough to get the glow plugs hot. I don't suppose your tractor uses a relay to heat the glow plugs on a timer like deal?

just a thought...

Hi Jae, no I don't believe it has a relay. Tell you the truth the glow plug's don't seem to help, I leave them on maybe ten second's , maybe that's not long enough. even after you warm it up if you let it set for about a half hour it doesn't start right up, just start's alittle better than when it's cold. They had the date on the oil filter from the last oil change which was in 2001 so I'am hoping maybe the ring's are gumed up and some fresh oil and some hard running might loosen it up. I'am running delo 400 15/40 same oil I run in my dump with just a touch of Rislone added. Mark
