No, not the ones with the brown trucks. Seems that the local utility company is challenged to supply a continuous source of electricity around here.(maybe all the holiday lights has something to do with it) Now its 3 times today the power went just for a moment and had restart, log in etc. Just for grins this is the second time I wrote this post./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Started looking thru my Radio Shack catalog and saw something called Uninterrupted Power Supply. Looks like what I need. Advice? Anyone have a similar situation?

DFB,
Where I work we use UPS on 3 out of 4 computers and they work great, even in brown out or some may call dirty power.

The model we use you just plug the power cord into the outlet and the phone line into the UPS than computer phone line from the UPS to the computer.

You could say its like a batery on trickle charge all the time until needed.

I seen the UPS last as up to one an half hours. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
I'm not sure of the price you might have to play, the UPS in which we bought 2 years ago cost $250.oo each and that was at college price.

There some departments on campus has UPS that look almost as big as a computer and they cost $$$$ /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Now if I could plug my coffee maker into a UPS and the power went off, heck I would be all set. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Better put another log on the fire..going to be a cool one tonight.

DFB, do a little looking with one of the search engines on the Internet for a UPS. I found several a couple of years ago, and wound up buying the TrippLite Internet Office UPS since I frequently have the same problem you're having. It's only good for a few minutes, but will allow you to finish whatever you are doing and shut down properly if the power goes off, and it's supposed to have software to shut everything down properly if the computer is left unattended (I'm not so sure the software works right). At any rate, it stops the problem you're having, and it's also a surge protector. I don't know how long its battery will last, but I've been running it over two years now, and just ran a battery check and it still shows to be OK.

Thanks guys. Just had outage #4 for the day. Bird I'll do that search if I can stay logged on long enough./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Thomas just heard on the news tonight that there is a firewood shortage, those that got it are getting $210.00 a cord. During the great ice storm of '98 it was being trucked in from Texas/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

$210 for a cord once weather has started? It's alway at least that or higher for hardwood in N.Calif if you are buying! Called two places in the greater Sacramento area; $235/cord for almod or oak.

Ps. I'm glad you are talking about power UPS. I HATE the other UPS; They conviently lost two of my pistols that were being shipped for gunsthing! I don't have a single good thought or word that company!

In RE: UPS, you get what you pay for. There are many brands on the market, and several models in each brand. Some will provide a decent time interval before forcing your system down. The software enabled graceful shutdown is a very nice feature, in case you have your system up, but are not in attendance at the moment of power loss, or voltage drop below a preset level. With the brownout situation, the power supply will even out your power drop, and to an extent the surges. A surge can (if great enough) still jump the circuits if they are not sensitive enough. The biggest UPS I've had backing up a network took a 3.5 foot by 8 foot footprint, and needed an additional 3 feet on each long side for servicing. It would hold 5 hubs, a router, 2 DEC ALPHA Servers, 90 drive hard drive cabinet, 2 50 gigabyte tape backup drives, and 3 smaller servers for just over an hour. It would take 45 minutes to bring the system down gracefully under normal circumstances, 25 minutes using quick and dirty procedures.
Research your needs, and go for a minimum of 15 minutes holding power if it is within your budget.

Robert,Your pistols were not lost, they were stolen.U.P.S. employs over 333,000 people, believe me,in this day and age more than just a handful of these people are not what you call "upstanding citizens".U.P.S. has been plaqued with the labor shortage as any other company in this country, they have to choose people anymore that will just simply show up for work, and thats usually not consistently. This is why now all handguns have to be shipped next day air,so the packages are handled by less people. Also,it's not your driver that's making off with the goods,99% of the time, pkgs. come up "missing" in a hub, where all pkgs. flow through. All hubs are manned by part-time employees, mostly young people who could give a crap about about anything.

APC; American Power Conversion; a very good UPS company; get their toll free number or go to their web site and they will size your UPS for you; 2 year warranty, $25000 lifetime equipment protection; a 300watt unit was @ $100; a 650w for $230. i've used a lot of their equipment, and no complaints.
