Backhoe Use Loader or Backhoe for Splitting Firewood ?

The closest I've come is taking felled tree trunks up to about 8" diameter and splitting them between the trunks of larger trees to shorten them up. It's easier with a chainsaw, but I get that satisfying snap when they let go! It's an original use for the FEL! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Farm Show magazine has had numerous stories about guys that made rigs that replaced the bucket on a backhoe to grab and split wood. Others built special splitters that were on the front of skidsteers so they could set the splitter on the wood and then split it.

I had an ash tree felled an was left with a trunk section nearly 46" across and about 48" long. After 'loadering' it vertical, I made a transverse cut with my 20" chainsaw all the way across the 46" face. I then took the loader bucket on my 16LA, set the cutting edge in the saw herf, and wiggled the loader a bit to split the log. Did it again to quarter it, then bucked it up and onto the splitter. It worked well with ash which is straight grained and sweet to split. Might be tough on other woods. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My dad welded a wedge to the boom of a backhoe and replaced the bucket with a crooked plate. I think you needed two people to operate it. One to sit at the hoe controls and another to move the wood around.
