My Ford 1969 3500 tractor uses a Heater Plug C5NE9A436A a large heater plug in the intake manifold. I would like to know if anyone knows how it is used. Is it energize through a relay while the key is turning over the motor. Or is it to preheat the manifold prior to firing up the motor. I just ordered one, mine has been burned out since I got the tractor many years ago. thanks for the help ED

Ford used that type of pre-heater quite a few years on many of their 3, 4, and some 6 cylinder engines. All of them were activted with the ignition switch. Some of them you had to turn the switch backwards one position, and some of them you had a pre-heat position just before the start position (between "on" and "start"). If your switch wonl't turn backward, see if there is an extra position between "on" and "start".

There is a small fuel line that has to connect to the pre-heater for it to work properly. The line comes from a small fuel pot on the left side of the tractor under the hood beside the voltage regulator. The return line from the top of the injectors goes to this fuel pot before going to the fuel tank. The small line for the pre-heater comes out the bottom of the fuel pot.

The way this thing works: When you activate the pre-heater, a wire coil inside it starts to get hot. At a pre-set temperature, a small valve in the pre-heater opens and lets a small amount of fuel flow across the wire coil. This vaporizes the fuel. The heated fuel vapor and warmed air will start the engine easier than cold fuel alone.

Hope this doesn't confuse you more.

Nope. Good info indeed.

I believe quite a few new model Deeres use this same system.

Mike I did some home work and am a little confused. my operators manual shows that I have a Distributor injection pump which do not have the excess fuel button. On the DIP type it calls for turning the key ccw to the heat heat start position and if it does not start in 25 sec. go to the heat position one over cw from the heat start and hold 15 sec. after starting the key will spring back and you must go to the on position.. My switch will not go in the ccw direction. and the 1st click to the cw position seems to be more or less the position to energize the guages. I do have a click in the cw position then spring loaded if I continue cw to the starter and then springs back to the first click cw for guage operation. It seems to me that either I will have to add a momentary switch and a contactor to energize the heater for up to 25 sec. starting and the possible 15sec warm up with out starting. I might have the wrong ignition switch. It appears I can use the manifold heater with my Distributor injection pump without having the in-line injection pumps excess fuel button. Look forward to your response. thanks ED

Ford used 2 types of injector pumps on those tractors. One was a CAV and the other was a Simms. The Simms had the excess fuel button and was generally used without the pre-heater. The CAV style pump DID NOT have the excess fuel button. The way you described your pump it sounds like you have a CAV pump. That pump is a rotary pump and is round on the rear with the injector lines spaced around this part of the pump. Most of the tractors that came with the CAV pump had the pre-heater.

Since your switch won't turn ccw, then there should be a position between "on" and "start", if it is the right switch for a pre-heater. You should be able to feel this position. If not, someone may have changed the switch.

Try this:
For safety reasons, disconnect one of the battery cables so that the engine won't start. Turn the key CW slowly and try to "feel" each position. With the key vertical (straight up and down), of course this is "off". The next position should be "on" (where the dash lights come on). The next position should be "pre-heat". This position will have some spring resistance to it, if you release it, it will return to the "on" position. The last one should be the "start" position. This position will also have some spring resistance to it and will return to "on" when released.

Early 3 cylinder tractors like yours that came with the Simms pump and the gas burners did not have a pre-heat position on the switch. I'm not sure that they still make 2 different switches, or if they just use one type for all. The one with the pre-heat position should work for all of the 3 ad 4 cylinder tractors.

Hope this helps
Mike

You are a great help Mike I will try to get to the back of the switch t and see the connections and test and ohm it out you seem to be right on, on these tractor and your help is greatly appreciated thanks ED
