Buying Advice Used 2016 Mahindra Max 24 - need advice

This is my first post but I've been reading the forums for a little while now as I try to figure out what kind of tractor I need for my purposes. As luck would have it, I just sorta fell into someone who has one for sale by owner....its a lightly used 2016 Mahindra Max 24 TLB combo w/ MMM and 200 hours on it, R4 tires. Asking $18,000. Also has a couple of implements included. A post hole digger (don't need it) and a 5ft rear blade.

So I have lots of questions. Does anyone have an opinion on the asking price? It seems a hair high to me considering its a private party sale. I'm just very hesitant to buy from a private party who doesn't have the reputation issues to worry about that a dealer would. Should I be worried about that?

I live on 12 acres with about 9 fairly dense woods. I will use the MMM to mow a little less than 3 acres. Also need the tractor for snow removal from a 950 foot limestone gravel driveway... not sure if the back blade and FEL are the best way to do that or if I should just buy a quick attach plow blade. Mostly will be used for property maintenance and landscaping, small scale vegetable gardening and to maintain the gravel driveway with a rake or box blade. I also occasionally maintain trails in adjacent 25 acres for kids 4 wheelers. Is the max 24 more than I need? Should I be looking at emax machines instead?

I went to the Mahindra website and speced out a similar TLB with a 5' blade and post hole digger, and it came in at around $32000.
Of course that's just the list price which nobody actually pays, but should give you a starting point.

The Max line (Max 24, Max 26XL) is made for Mahindra by Mitsibushi Heavy Equipment in Japan. They are very solid tractors.

These listings could be old but can give you a rough idea of pricing range to expect. (1st and last link for Novak Supply - price still good @ $18,000 for new 2017 TLB.

List price on economy 5' blade - $400
List price on mid-mount mower - $4340
List price on post-hole auger - $1120

For $18,000 you would basically be saving about the $4100 cost for the mmm, post hole and rear blade implements (list price x .7)

Since it is a private seller you can try haggling with him for price and you can also get a realistic idea of what maintenance the current owner has performed vs a dealer who has no idea and just wants to dump the trade-in tractor on someone. Just ask. You can also ask him what he has used the tractor for and let him brag to you what he has done with it. You should be able to get an idea of whether it was abused or taken care of very well. Hth.

The seller probably paid sales tax on top of the price.

You probably will not pay sales tax when buying used.


Your questions about appropriateness of the tractor to your conditions depends partly on your location, as does sales tax.

But you're also losing some warranty time if Mahindra warranties are transferrable at all.

Used also means you either need cash or some level of consumer financing which is often at much higher rates.

I wasn't particularly thrilled with the MAX and eMAX I looked at. Can't put my finger on it exactly, but they just didn't feel right somehow.

Oh, and don't think you'll never need a post hole digger. You'll be surprised how many times you wished you had one.

Confused concerning the MMM price in your post ?? Is that just the mower implement cost??? Also mower and BH sub-frame can NOT operate simultaneously. Perhaps there are exceptions?

Yes, that was the price that Mahindra showed on their website in the "build your tractor" section.
