Buying Advice used 2240 4wd diesel

Im guessing a John Deere? My book shows a 1976 till 1982 make, with the 4wd starting in 1979. Apx Value 8,000 to 14,000. This would be a 179 Cubic Inch 3Cyl (JD) with apx 50 H.P. Weighing in about 5,500# dry weight. Serial # Breaks as follows: '79 305307, '80 350000, '81 392292, '82 418608 (found on the right side of frame).
I don't know if the FWD is Hyd drive or mechanical, would assume hyd as the larger tractors started the mechanical in the 50 series. there were several issues with the hyd drives but did work for the most part.
That's all I can realy tell you about the tractor as i've never even seen a 2240. Sounds like it should be a handy little loader or utility tractor.

I used a friend's 2640 this past fall to work up a new, 3 acre pasture and get it ready for planting.
Great tractor! Lot's of power for the frame size! Needed full wheel weights to keep traction.
My friend has owned a couple of 40 series utility tractors and his take on problems with them was to avoid the machines with the reverser tranny or the overdrive tranny.
He said the tranny won't hold up with the rest of the machine for the number of hours that the tractors will normally run before a major rebuild.
If you find one with the 8x4 tranny - get it!

Have you checked which front wheel assist it has? I once saw a 2130 with mfwd. I was told it was the Canadian version of the 2030. It had a cab and the 40 series style front nose and hood, so it did not look anything like my 2030.
