Hello everyone. I have been ready posts for quite some time, but this is the first time I have participated. Since most of ya'll (yeah I'm from Missouri and we talk/type funny) are much more informed than I am, I thought I would ask for opinions on a used tractor I am looking at. It is a 1999 4X4 4600, hydro trans, industrial tires, with a woods FEL 60 inch bucket. The tractor seems to be in good shape, the tires have good rubber and I can't find any leaks or evidence of leaks on it. The only real concern that I have is that it has 1662 hours on it. The guy is asking $15,400 for it, and that is a lot less than it would cost for a new one but I am a little hesitant due to the hours. Is this a reasonable price for the tractor? Is having a lot of hours something to be concerned about? The guy who has it is a car dealer who traded for it with a John Deere dealer. I don't know the history of the machine, and he doesn't either.

Thanks for your help.

Tim

Well, I don't think its a deal you CAN'T pass up. I would check out MachineFinder at Deere's site. You can find deals on similar machines at Deere dealers near you. I would feal much better getting a used machine from a dealer, since they would have the means to make things right if there was something that goes wrong. Besides I think you might find a deal that is as good. Or you can prove me completely wrong, which is quite OK with me. I hope this helps! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I wouldn't worry too much about the hours. I've got the same tractor but a year newer. I've got about the same hours on mine. I've used mine very hard and have had zero problems with it.

I'm not sure of the price. Do a search on the internet for similiar tractors selling.

The hours don't sound excessive. I've got a 2000 4700 with 1100+ hrs with no significant problems. If you can, check the engine & hydraulic oil or ask when it was last changed. If they'll change it, look at the filters. You can expect some metal shavings in the hydraulic oil filter; mostly small brass and steel. Look at the loader pins for fit or excessive wear. This will give you some idea of the wear and lubing. Does it have any rear hydraulic couplings? These are handy. A canopy is nice also.

It does have the rear hydro couplers on it. I will check with him on the fluids. The loader (bucker and pins) look to be in good condition. There is no paint wore off the bucket at all. In fact, it looks like the loader was just added. There aren't any paint chips or rusty spots at all. They cleaned it up pretty nice, it doesn't have any dents or dings. I just need to try to find out about the previous owner and how it was used.

Thanks for your help!!

I would suggest- Copy the S# and take it to your local JD dealer. he can run the numbers and tell you the first owners name and address (at the time) Sounds like a good deal to me, the hours would not bother me. I am another one that puts alot of time in the seat.

Excellent point DDT. Deere does a great job of keeping the records on the repairs available to dealers. I have a comment about the bucket. Thats seems to be a small bucket, only 60" when the typical JD 460 loader has a 72". The price on it is not in my experience area. I have no comment on that other then to say for that year with those hours, expect to pay about 25% to 30% less then what it sold for new. I would also check with your dealer and see if he has any 4600's to compare to. I would think a new comparable 4610 with HST would be over $25,000 and you may still have to add tax to that. Rat...
