My son is looking at buying a used car, newer model 2006 or later... He is a cash buyer and I'm trying to avoid pitfalls... Rule number one, they must provide a clear tittle or walk away... Any thing else I should be looking at? I never buy used and run cars and trucks until the wheels fall off... BIL will go with along and knows the ropes when buying! He wants a 25,000 car for $17,000 and can probably get the deal! Trying to avoid liens on newer cars and dealers who didn't pay the balance off when they should have and son will be stuck with the original loan!

Shop hard for this price you may get a new car with the economy the way it is depends on what type vehicle he's looking for..;)

They are selling new Ford Fusions and Chev Impala's in this area for around 17k. Dealer names are Classic Chevrolet in Mentor OH., and Mulinax Ford in Wickliff OH.

New Fusions in my area can be bought for about $14k. 2010 Fusions are due out in the next month or so, Ford needs to dump the 2009's. The 2010 is quite a nice looking car.

With the deals going on he can get a NEW 25K car for 17K....with ZERO percent financing.

Other than that he should buy a car fax report.

I agree. With 17K in cash you could get a new nice car from any manufacture. I read the other day you can walk into most dealerships and take 20% to 25% off the sticker and give them that offer and say you have 1 chance to make it happen, if not I am walking out.

I agree also that if your son has 17K to spend he can get a brand new car with a warranty. Key word here is WARRANTY. So he and you can be assured there are no liens and have a safe vehicle that he won't have to worry about breaking down. There are many brands available in that price range.

Some people still take a used car to their own mechanic to have it inspected before buying. That's probably not a bad idea. I used to be pretty good at doing those inspections myself, but as I got older and the cars got more complicated, I just prefer dealing with a dealer I trust and/or one who provides a warranty.

I'm trying to steer him toward new... Nissan has new cars for less than $10,000 (radio extra)...
