I’m considering buying a used electric golf for putting around the property. It doesn’t have to be pretty or fancy. Two seater is fine. I don’t have a need for a UTV or four wheeler. Any tips on what to look for or avoid? I’m thinking $5-7k budget.

You might want to consider a used E-Gator. Basically a 48 volt Golf cart, with a bed that can carry a lot! I absolutely LOVE mine! It get's used constantly in the warmer months and the Diesel Mule sits unused. It is the most used and enjoyed piece of equipment I own. WARNING though. Parts prices are beyond your worst wildest dreams. Best to buy a parts machine.

With that budget you can pretty much get what you want...you can get a really nice cart for half of your upper limit...

Personally I would stay away from the RXV models (fly by wire) and get a bit older TXT / DCS (EzGo) 36 or 48 volt...easy to get parts and upgrades...
Good Luck...

BTW there is an excellent forum for carts with some very knowledgeable people over there...great info on batteries etc...

We have a 4x4 ez go golf cart we bought used for $1600. Replaced all the batteries and have less than $3000 in it. Perfect for puttering around and hunting.

I agree that your stated budget should get you a nice turn key cart. A reasonable condition unmodified cart would be more in the 3k ballpark, but markets vary.
I bought a 36 volt TXT EzGo cart 18 years ago for $1600, but it needed batteries ($600 +/-).
Since batteries are expensive, I added an on board high end charger that has programmable charging profiles for various battery manufacturers.

Go to a large golf cart dealer and buy an off lease unit with a brand new set of batteries. The best time to buy is end of season in the fall.

The negative of electric carts is the batteries are only good 3-5 years and you need to replace them all.

I've bought a couple of used carts and have had excellent luck with them. Both were around 20 years old when I bought them, both for well under $2K. My current 1997 TXT model is still used every day, several times per day, but pleasure cruising around the place and for hauling things like trash, tools, feed, etc.. Both of my purchases have/had beds and are used around our place for not only transporting but also for work.

For my buck, I'd stay with EZGo. Parts are much more available when needed, and at decent prices. There's not enough difference in the 36V and the 48V for a lot more money, so 36V for me is plenty adequate. The more accessories you can get on your new purchase, the better. Things like LED lights, bed, lift kit, canopy, and trailer hitch aren't absolutely necessary, but they sure are convenient. Off-road tires and rims are pretty, but totally unnecessary; not something I'd pay anything extra for.

The electric models are very easy to work on if/when needed. The older Textron (TXT) models are much more plentiful and cheaper. Batteries granted are the most expensive thing you may have to buy in the future, but they're certainly not deal killers. I've been getting around 7 years out of a set of Trojan 105 batteries.

I think with a little shopping you'll be able to snag a good deal for WELL under the $4K-$5K budget. I did buy both of mine from CL listing, but then we all know the hazard of buying for CL. Fortunately, all of their listings aren't fake.

have you tried a golf cart on your property to see how it goes?
We borrowed a neighbors and within 2 minutes we knew we needed something with a decent suspension. We have a fairly flat but not smooth property, and the golf cart beat us up quite a bit. It had a small lift kit and off road tires, but it just didn't seem to make a difference, you felt everything. Drove another neighbors UTV (Ranger 4 seat) and it was very smooth. Seems if you have a tractor on your property, you 'may" not have grounds conducive to a golf cart.

Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. Glad to hear my budget is on the high side. The roughness of my lanes may be an issue. I’ll get my nearby buddy to come over in his for a test ride. A UTV would be nice but the cost is up there for my limited needs.

I went through this last year. Thought an electric cart would be great. Seemed very expensive for what you get, plus batteries need periodic replacement. Crappy ones were $2500 and nice ones over $5000.

Wound up getting a new Kawasaki Mule SX for $6800 on sale. Comes with a 3 year warranty. The only things I have added were a trailer hitch and windshield. Nice having a dump bed. Mounted a seat in the back and the grandkids love riding around with us.

It does not get a lot of use but is nice to have when needed. We have put about 50 hours on it. When I looked at it, the cost of gas was less than cost of battery replacement and charging.

We use ours for cruising trails as well. Nice to fill the tank and know you can get back home even if you go on a 20 mile run without worrying if the batteries are fully charged or what condition they are in.
