I recently purchased a small farm of 22 acres that I have no intention of farming. In the barn I have two major peices of equipment that I no longer will need.

The first is a round baler -

The second is a hay cutter -

Farmer that I bought from used this equipment just last season so I know that it works.

My questions are these:

How would I go about selling them? Is the newspaper the easiest way?

How much would I expect to get for them?

Not being a farmer, I do not know models, sizes, etc.

Hi Kozmo,

If you look around on each machine, there should be a manufacturer's tag that tells model number and serial number. It might also say year of manufacture. Start with these.

I'm assuming you bought this as part of a package, so you don't really know how much you paid for them. And to avoid any potential mistakes, you are SURE that you own them and that the farmer didn't just leave them there over the winter and plans to move them to his property in the spring???????????

Once you know the make/model, I'd go to that dealer in your area. Chances are good that they were purhased from him by the original owner. I'd take some detail pics of the units to take with you. He should be able to tell you (1) the list price when new and (2) how much he would sell each machine for in the condition yours is in. You can base your asking price on his info.

If you want to avoid the sales hassle, you could offer those in trade for something you might want that he carries. Expect a significant discount if you trade or sell them outright to a dealer. You can sell it for more on your own. Just make sure you clearly explain through any private sale that you make no warranties on the equipment and that you have no knowledge of their condition or functioning as you have never used them.

If it were me, I'd advertise in the local paper that lists a lot of farm equipment. Spring likely would be a better time to offer it, since it is haying equipment.

That's my two cents.......

Take some pics and post them on here and I am sure you will get a lot of info on them. Might even find some buyers as there are a lot of TBN members in your area.

I'd guess they aren't worth much.. but I'll come haul them away for you for cheap! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Take a look at the heavy equipment trader, and other farm publications.. and find out an average price.. then price yours according to condition and how fast you want them to move. In other words.. if you want to move them fast.. price them a tad under similar products.. or price them a tad above it you don't mind setting on them till someone wants that specific model.. etc.. etc.

Find make, yr, and model, then plug them into auction search on web. That would give you a minimum of what to expect. Then do same for classifieds for general high end estimate(Thriftynickelads,com/allpapers is a good one). Then I'd put them in paper or ag news cassified etc. Normally dealers will pay you close to average auction price(low end of price range).....especially if not trading in for new equip.

Every piece of farm machinery in the past many decades has a serial plate on it with nodel & serial number (from which to figure the age). It will be on a frame member somewhere that does not see a lot of wear, & out of the way.

Find this.

Also, they have the maker & the model number on the machine painted or decaled on somewhere.

The color of paint alone will tell us a lot....

You _must_ identify them, or you will get taken. Are they very very old, or just old? I would expect a newer machine would not be left behind... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A picture will at least get you good info on who made it, & about how old it is, and a relative value.

In farming areas there is always a regional farm paper that is basically a classified section of farm stuff. This is _THE_ best place to advertise farm equipment. For my part of Minnesota, it is a tabloid paper called 'The Land'. Some will cover a whole state, or 3 state area, or just a few counties. Find _the_ one for your area, and you will get the best bang for the classified buck.

Find out what make and model the equipment is and like someone else said post some pictures. TBN has a classified section where you can post and sell equipment. Also look on www.fastline.com it lists lots of equipment for sale by dealers mostly and you might be able to compare what you have to similar equipment.
