Flail Mower Used flail mower prices

Checking if anybody knows what used flail mowers have been going for. Looking at a 90 inch cut that needs about $300 in repairs I'm guessing. And a 102 inch cut that looks brand new on the underside, still has paint on the cutters. The owner says that the 102 inch was from Cal Trans. The paint is very faded orange. I could not find any manufacturer's names on either unit. The 102 inch did have a plate riveted to it with the state of Oregon engraved on it.

Just so happens I bought one about a week ago (hope to have some pictures posted soon). I found an Alamo SHD 74" flail that a local municipality was selling. They had used it for about 5 years to keep one of their parks in shape and it had seen relatively light use. The sale price was $800

I had to add a new PTO guard, new skid shoes, a new shield on the back and a few various bolts. Nothing critical. The replacement parts came to about $200.
Not a bad deal in my book when a new one runs about $4K give or take.
The paint is pretty good, but I want to clean it up and repaint it.

RHuges, I would have to say that $1000 for a $4000 implement sounds good to me.

I don't paint tractors blue but I could paint a new flail mower blue. It'll look great from a distance...in the dark...if you squint your eyes a little. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On a more serious note, a Rears Pak-Flail, Vrisimo, Dandle or the like is what we call up here "orchard quality", meaning it will take weekly use mowing tens or hundreds of acres for years. Then there are the lighter units, like Caroni, that do a fine job, but not for hundreds of hours a year. If you can find a very high quality unit with little use, it is the way to go. If you find a rough flail mower, it is best to walk away. They can get expensive to repair.

I use a Vrismo in my orchard. Very quiet and smooth.

Dave, I liked Rob's idea of blue tinted sun glass's, sounds a lot cheaper to me. If I use it in the dark with no lights, it might be ok. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I'm going to ponder this for a while. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
