I'm looking at a used gator 6x4 Diesel with 870 hours. Thr guy wants 6k. That seems pretty fair. Does anyone have any comparison? or thoughts?

Is the 6x4 any less capable for hunting and getting through the woods than say an HPX 4x4?

That doesn't seem bad at all, even though on olx.com there is like a 2005 Kubota RTV 900W with dump bed and 357 hours for $2700. 4x4 though which has power for towing. Also a diesel. But i looked at polaris rangers that were 6x6 and have great towing power for around the same price.

That machine will only leave you high centered, stuck and cursing,.. UNLESS you stay on flat ground. Get something with independent suspension and more ground clearance.

I had a diesel 6x4 and was surprised at the places it would go. The only problems I had was in deep mud, and even then it never really bottomed out. When you climb out over the top of a steep hill the front end will come off the ground until the middle axle clears the top. Kinda startling the first time it happens. The only time I've bottomed out was with my current HPX and that was with the 4x4 engaged and the rear axle locked.

Up here they are only good on the farm,.. and even then we have had a couple come into our dealership for trade in on RTV 900's because of disappointment. To each his own I guess,.. the one major drawback for me was they turn like crap,.. and on ice,.. fugetaboutit :)

I suppose the question would be what type woods. If one is going on well-established trails that do not involve a lot of erratic terrain, then it would be a great choice. If true off-roading is in the mix, then probably not. Many potential buyers of this particular machine really bought it not knowing what its original intent was--that of a "pack mule" which could negotiate muddy lots, etc. carrying cargo. Now, with other options, this machine has taken a back seat, which is ashame, it is a reliable, simple workhorse. I have an XUV and I really like the wheel travel. My dad has a Ranger and feels the same. Interestingly, though, if either of us were to be bluntly honest about our needs, 95% of what we do and where we go could be done with an old 6x4 JD Gator.

What year model?

If you plan on using it for hunting, I think you would be better off with a HPX.

As a reference: I just sold my 2005 HPX 4X4 Gas for $7K with 250 hours on it.

Look at the Rangers - hard to beat.

I was looking to sell my 6x4 gator diesel two years ago with 100 hours on it. The machine was garage kept and in perfect condition. My best offer was $5000, so I've kept it for yard work. I think $6000 for an 870 hour machine is way high.

I also don't think it's a good hunting vehicle. It's a great work vehicle however.

my hpx was in great shape but john deere told me that they could only give me like 3,800.00 or some thing like that and they wanted me to leave all my extras on it.needless to say i am still drivin it around today.lol. i don't think i will ever sell her she is just to good of a machine to let go.i should take her in for a vale adjustment though.

Crazy offer on their part. I sold mine thru the dealer, but I found the actual buyer. It worked out well for everybody.
