Used Litter

It's kind of linked to tractor'ing, as I'll be using the tractor to do it.

We have 3 inside cats. Boy - we sure go through litter.

It seems a shame to keep tossing it into the landfill. Does anyone till it into the soil? I have no idea what it's made out of, so I wouldn't begin to guess if it's safe or not. I wouldn't be using that soil for food plots, at most just flowers.

Is kitty litter made out of sand or some other substance?

The stuff we use is nothing more than ground clay, not what you would want to use for soil. I dump it in a swamp, it fills quickly enough with the natural vegetation it disappears year to year.

I wouldn't use cat litter where you grow people food. Cat poop can carry nasties that can jump to people. Dig a hole and bury it away from your garden.

For years we used oil dry for as many as 3 cats at a time until they came out with the clumping/scoopable litter quite a few years back - would never go back to it now, the scoopable is worlds better and no more expensive. Smells soooo much better too and the cats like it better as well. If I'm not mistaken it is also derived from clay like the oil dry. When I scoop the poop I put it in the household garbage - there's not that much bulk to it.

Your litter consumption will drastically decrease. I think it paid for itself within a couple of years. Plus you do not have to mess with it often (once a week). You never throw out good litter, you just add a little every week. You also get to use cheap waste bags, I buy office trash can liners from sams, for $15 or so you get a few thousand bags, and each bag last a week for us with 2 big male cats.

You didn't mention how much land you have to "spread" you litter out on. I have a LitterMaid and like the others it reduces the amount of used litter drastically. I take my waste on put it all in one location until I have a pretty good pile, then scoop it up with the tractor bucket and take out to the wood for final disposal. First thing I would do is invest in a self cleaning litter box.
I've had my litter maid for about 5 years without and real problems.

have 6 that we rescued we also use the natural clay stuff and dump it in a corner and bury. I would not use it on a garden, also watch out for kids sand boxes cats love those.

Agree with the posts, not for your food production area. If you have a manure pile that gets spread on the land, throw it on there. Also, there are other kinds of litter made of grain that break down better.

NOTE: Wherever you dump it, dogs will try and eat the cat poop.
