Hiya,

I'm looking at either one for the 3/4 acre of lawn around the house. (Sloped so it would give a little hydro a good workout I think) The dealer will sell me the LT for $800. It has a rear bagger that I most likely take off as my "lawn" is more like a pasture than a lawn. (I was thinking about getting a RFM for the cab tractor but I really don't want to be driving a 5K Lb machine over the septic system) It's in generaly good condition, unknown hours, unknown year, hydro.

The x300 would be new and with a 42" deck for hopefully a little less than list.

I'm concerned that the LT may be close to end of service life as it's 11 years old at least and could be over 15 and I'm paying 1/3 the price of a new x300 that should have a 15-20 year life span ahead of it. Also, a 4 year warranty.

So, what's the wisdom of the brain trust here think? LT or x300?

Tom

I had an LT166 for 12 years and could have easily gotten another 12 out of it. I take exceptional care of my equipment though. I sold it last year for $850 with no bagger. I think I'd try to talk down the LT155 a bit and buy it. Then if you decide you would rather have the X300 you can probably get most of your money back.

By the way I bought an X300 to replace the LT166 and the X300 is a very nice tractor. I ended up only keeping the X300 a few months and bought a 2003 X475. I sold the X300 at 30 hours. If you are going to buy a X300 I'd buy one a year or so old so you still have the warranty but don't take the initial depreciation. There should be plenty of X300s on CL.

unless Im mistaken, the LT has the 15HP Kohler in it which had a design flaw and routinely threw a rod through the sidewall. Not all of them, but enough to cause JD and Kohler to abandon the 15 and move to the 16. The x series is like going from a '72 Ford Pinto to a 2011 Ford Focus.

I bought a x300 last year and it is a nice machine. One issue though is that when mowing on a side hill, the mower deck seems to shift and cuts lower on the down hill side. I have heard the same complaint from others on this site and it seems that the dealers have no fix. I have heard folks say that they have taken in to the dealer several times to adjust and it still does it. My old JD LX172 never had this issue. I learn to lean real hard on side hills and try not to trigger the safety switch in the seat. For the price it is a lot of mower and I can live with this issue. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Personally I'd go with the X320 if you can afford it as the X300 uses the same Tuff-Torq K46 tranny that the BBM (Big Box Mart) grade lawn tractors use.

But I'd still choose the X300 over the LT if those were my only choices.
