I have a few questions about buying a tiller for my 1520. I measured the width of my tractor and it is about 78 inches. I am looking at a Used New Holland 105 A 5 foot rotor tiller. Would this tiller be a good match for my tractor? The tiller is a little narrower than the tractor, can I offset if any? Also is this a gear driven or a chain driven tiller?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Something doesn't sound right, even a TC45A at about twice the size as a 1520 is listed by NH as only being 66 inches wide in stock configuration. I would find it quite unusual for a 1520 to have a wheel track of much more than 50-52"" unless it either had duals or some MAJOR rim spacers. Are you absolutely sure the wheel width is 78"? For most things like a FEL bucket or rear implement, the wheel track being covered is the primary consideration. I would remeasue, just to reconfirm before putting the nix on the #105A tiller. Plus, a 60" tiller is about all a 23-25 HP machine is going to handle well. Usually, they say about 5 PTO HP per 1 foot of implement.

Also, the 105A is gear driven.

A 1520 John Deere is an Agricultural tractor and thus much wider than compact tractors. Tractor data specs it as 74" wheelbase (that may be minimum) but I would think that it is adjustable by sliding the front axles inward and also the rear tires can be adjusted by either loosening the axle hold down bolts and sliding the hub or changing the configuration of the bolts on the outer rim. Not being familiar with this model, I am not sure how it is set up, but any 2 WD ag tractor has adjustable wheel spacing to accomodate varied row width. Since it is listed as a 46 HP at the PTO, you should have no problem pulling a 7 foot tiller (might have trouble laying out the cash for one that size though)

In summary, you should have no problem with pulling the one you found and I am sure you can adjust your wheels some, but maybe not to 60". You really need at least a 72" tiller for that size tractor to be efficient and utilize the HP available

Thanks guys. I should have clarified that my tractor is a 1969 John Deere 1520. It does have all the width adjustments you mention. I live in a small town in rural Montana and I found that tiller used. Money is an issue right now, so I may go with this one with the idea of trading for a bigger tiller in the future.

I forgot a couple of things. I was hoping this tiller is a gear drive, as that is what I wanted. Also can I offset the tiller to cover one wheel track?

Thanks-Jon
