Anyone ever see used post driver for sale? I am thinking about purchasing one new (haven't seen any used ones myself), but am having a hard time justifying it to myself (my wife on the otherhand always says "just buy it")..but I am cheap (understatement).

Anyway, there is a guy about 1 hour from me that rents out at 70/hour with him operating it. I need to pay for travel. My guess is that right of the bat I have close to 3 days of work I could use him for, for the various pastures I need done.

My problem is, I rarely, if ever, get 8 hours a day to do anyone one task, so for the same reason I ended up buying a pto chipper instead of renting one, so it was there when I needed it, even for just a few hours work, I am considering purchasing a driver (again).

However, unlike the chipper, which there is no end in sight to things I need to chip, because everything grows back, I would guess that sooner or later I am going to have driver all the posts I will ever need to...therefore, I could sell it in a few years.

So in factoring the pros and cons of buy versus rent, I need to factor in the resale value of a $5000 piece of equipment. (I am looking at the king hitter series II with a rock spike which is pretty necessary around here...).

Opinions?

I only paid $2250 for my post driver and I can drive a 12" 10' post with it. What are you looking to buy for $5000?

As far as resale when I was looking a used one was about 25-30% off of what new was. To me it was worth it just to buy a new one.

If I could get one that would work for $1000, or even $2250 as cowboydoc suggested, it would be a no-brainer decision for me...

The only dealer that I know of in my area that sells post drivers sells and recommends the kinghitter brand, and the only postdriver for hire in the area also uses the kinghitter with a rock-spike attachment. Hence I start to get up into the $5000 range on my purchase....

What are the specs on the Worksaver you have? How will it perform in very rocky soil.

Go to Shaver, then to the bottom of the page and click on "Driver Specifications".

We have a new shaver post driver that was sold to a customer several years ago and never used. Send me an email if you are interested, it's located in Connecticut. Thanks.

Mine has worked really well. Do a search on MikePA. He pounded in alot of rocks at his place. It won't make any difference if you have the kinghitter or the worksaver you will get the same results in rocks.

I realize that trying to drive a piece of wood, thru a rock, is going to give similar results no matter what driver you use...but I did watch the kinghitter w/rock spike in action about 2 weeks ago...drove the spike directy thru a huge fieldstone rock that was at the end of the rockwall, and then pulled it out and drove the 8inch locust post right thru the 5 inch hole he made...seems the rock was more or less shattered as opposed to a nice clean hole.

Not sure if the workshaver offers a rock spike or not, but in my area it seems pretty necessary. I'll look into it.

Yea you're into a whole other class of drivers with that one. You probably will pay $5k or better for one of those. We have one that we use for rocks but it's not a pounder and goes on a skidsteer.

Cowboydoc,

What brand of driver do you have? Do you use it on your 4600?

Thanks,
Dan
