Neighbor is selling a post hole digger with 12 auger for $350.00, its a year old with little use on it, I guess they put their fencing up on their 2 acres and have no need for it now. They purchased it from Tractor Supply for over $500. Does anybody know who makes it for TSC and if it is worth $350.00? I know the name brands sell for close to 1,000 new?
AND... A Merry Christmas to All from the new guy

A lot depends on which mfg. it really is that TSC supplies...If you had the chance to look at it close it might have the mfg. stamped somewhere. Its not a bad price because if you bought new it would be around $550-600 for a good brand like Green Mfg (also known as Greenline) plus shipping and/ or taxes....also make sure it fits on your machine (whatever type you have) first before you buy...

I have a TSC PHD with 12" auger. If I had found one for $350 instead of over $500 I would have bought without thinking twice.
But then have you tried making an offer of a lesser amount.

Do you guys really want a 12" diameter auger? Mine is 9" and it seems to make a big enough hole...........

For future fencing (house type fence), I plan to put in metal posts, so I'm thinking of going to a 6" auger.............. 12 would seem like way overkill for that.

I always seem to need the extra diameter to keep a fence row in line. maybe it's because I only seem to do about 10 poles at a time and don't get enough practice learning to get a straight line of fence post.
I also use post hole digger for planting trees and shrubs. 12" works great for that.

I have 9" and 14" augers for mine. The 14" worked well for setting 6x6 posts on 12" cupons...the 9" works well for setting split rail fence posts.

Myself if I had to have only one auger, I would probably go with a 12" for reasons stated by Ron... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

$350 for a slightly used low end PHD with 12" auger included sounds reasonable to me too...

If it works and fits on your machine, I would grab it. For $350.00 w/auger, I think it's a good deal. You can always get other sized augers for it. I paid $565 for mine delivered. G

I think TSC sells them on sale at times for around 350-375, plus the augers which sell for 100 for a grand total of 450-475 plus tax.
The questions is if you need it and will it do the job you need it to do, then by all means go for it...it's especially nice to know the previous owners...you can probably gauge how well it was used -or abused-.
I was fortunate to find a used Worksaver PHD from a "Gentleman Farmer" who was "retiring" and paid $75 for the head unit and had to buy a new auger (12").
As to the auger size, you wouldn't think it at first, but a 12" auger is mostly too small for planting 6x6's in the ground, it leaves very little adjustment room when you're trying to get them lined up. It worked very well though for 4-5 and 5-6 round posts in a fence line.

To answer one of the original questions, SpeeCo supplies TSC here in Ohio.

is worth $350.00?

To answer the next one.......Yes

Leinbach makes the one TSC quoted me. 384.79 plus 115.62 for the 12" auger before tax. TSC prices can vary by store and area. These units have a good rep for durability in this price range.

You'd be about 1,000.00 to 1,100.00 for a heavy duty setup and they will take 24" and some larger augers if you have the PTO HP to push it. My dealer recommended I max out at 18" on my L3130 w/ 24 PTO HP. Might run a 24" OK in soft loamy soils but I have lots of rocks. You can also buy these with downpressure kits, but you'll have to get someone else to comment there.

Good luck.
