One of the things that concerned me originally about purchasing a Power Trac, is the lack of a robust market for used machines. If Power Trac distributed their product through a traditional dealer base, then such a market would automatically exist. However, since these tractors are only available direct from the factory, such a market does not exist in an organized fashion.
This does not mean, however, that demand for used Power Tracs doesn’t exist. As evidenced by the 1430 in NC thread, lots of folks are interested in potentially getting a used PT. I’m one of those people, for example, who is “never satisfied” and I would like to trade for a 1430 myself. I called the factory about potentially upgrading and they didn’t seem very interested. At one point, they told me to send them a fax with what I wanted. I sent a fax but did not hear back from the factory. I called them again and they said they would take my unit on consignment but wasn’t really interested in taking it in trade for a new model. I guess they aren’t really interested in creating a “secondary” market for their products. However, I think this is short sighted. Many more folks would consider these products if they were comfortable they could sell or trade them, at a reasonable discount, if their needs or interests changed. As it is, we are on our own with a product most people have never heard of.
At the very least, it would be a simple matter for the factory to establish a venue to offer used Power Tracs on their web site. Even though the factory would not directly benefit from this effort, it would help create an organized secondary market for the tractors. If the factory went to the effort to create a certification program, they could even make some money. If you have ever worked in the car business, then you know that there is more money to be made selling used cars than new ones.
Anyway, I think the factory should help create this secondary market. It would protect our investments and create greater deamand for new Power Tracs.
