I have wanted a tiller for some time for garden and very small food plot work, and I found a deal or so I thought on Craigslist. Bought an old in decent shape 5 ft Taylor-way 962 P gear driven tiller for $800.
Gear box oil looks ok, but the gear drive case has caramel colored gel for oil. I suspect water in there and need to replace it. Suspect water from breather vent, but I will store inside barn.

My question is can I run the tiller on pto to warm it up and then turn it upside down to drain oil out of fill hole or must I remove gear case cover and clean it that way? This design has a fill hole on top of the case and a plug in the middle on the side to let you know when full.

I had planned to remove the cover and completely clean until I looked at the seal which is not leaking but has cracks on the exposed edges. It made me worried about destroying the seal If I removed it.

Advice from more knowledgeable mechanics most welcome.

Also, the slip clutch does not have the spring type bolts. Any suggestions on slipping the clutch to make sure it will work before putting it in my rocky soil and creating a bigger problem?

Thanks in advance.

Warm it up and suck it out with a turkey baster or oil suction gun (available at auto parts stores), far as the clutch, no clue.

You're in exactly the same situation as I was back I bought an used tiller for my tractor. It's that same style of cover with no drain plug.

I just took the cover out, cleaned everything and also inspected all the gears and chain to see if there was anything wrong it.

I say, just take the cover off and clean everything nicely. It gives a nice peace of mind at least.

With water contamination I would open it up and clean it out. If the gasket becomes unserviceable just use a silicone type gasket product like used on differentials.
As far as the slip clutch, I am only familiar with the adjustable spring types. Post a picture of the clutch and maybe someone can offer an opinion.

How both my Troy Bilt's are. Fill plug on top, level plug but no drain plug.

It sounds like the skip clutch may be a Belleville washer type, where there is a nut or other mechanism to compress the Belleville washer to provide pressure to the clutch plate.

Here's an article describing various types of slip clutches and how to adjust them.

Yeah, even the small engines are like that more and more. I bought a wheeled string trimmer and discovered that oil needs to be removed with a suction device; no drain plug.

Treat it like any differential and pull the cover, drain, clean and inspect, and use a RTV like Permatex's 81182 to reseal.
