Longtime lurker, first time poster

I am looking at a dk40 used. Very low hours and wanted advice on what to look for to make sure that it has not been abused or driven into a river and then sold as "Brand new condition" If anyone can give there educated input i would appreciate it

Thanks

These types of posts are frequent, I think I'm gonna start a post on pulling together all the points to consider and then post the list as a reference document. Many, including me, would benefit from such a list.

Here goes my couple of first points.

1) Look for leaks, any fluid leaking anywhere, including drips on the ground.
2) If possible, check compression, gauges are cheap (harbor freight) or can be borrowed, local dealer can tell you what compression should be.
3) Test drive train, I push against something immovable while in 4 wheel drive and make sure the wheels spin.
4) Let her run for a while and see if she gets hot, shoot with a heat gun if you have one, again, local dealer should be able to tell you what temp she should run at.
5) Check all grease points for grease and slop, see if pins or bushings show any wear.
6) Put in gear and see if brakes work and hold hard. Test both sides on split brakes.
7) Check all guages
8) Volt meter on battery while running, see if you are getting more than 13 volts or so, to see if alternator is charging.
9) Check oil for water, hydro and engine.
10) Ask if 50 hour service was completed, if so try to validate, that's a critical service.
11) Ask a local dealer to run vin and see if there are any issues with the machine.
12) Did I mention make friends with local dealer?
13) Ask if there have been an issues with the machine.
14) Check all lights and switches and kill switches.
15) Make sure you start when cold, again, heat gun is helpful in ensuring the machine has not been warmed up prior to your arrival.

Post any and all questions on this forum, these guys know about as much as anyone regarding these machines.

Good luck,
Joel

TBN recommends this book:

Trying to list all the do(s) and don't(s) in a reply in the forum is tough. Your investment is going to be a significant chunk of change - spend a little bit up front, get the book and don't pull the trigger too early. It's easy to get excited about a machine, buy it quick and regret it later. Buying from a dealer has it's advantages. I've tasted the bitterness of poor quality well after the sweetness of low price faded. Don't make the same mistake. Take your time, research and maybe have someone very knowledgeable check it out with you. Sometimes a bargain, isn't. Good luck!

Thanks for the help,

Ken, it's not a bargain, i think it is a fair price. I just want to be as educated as possible, when i comes to looking at the machine.

Thanks

another thought, some dealers for a fee will go over the machine for you.
For example, my local Kubota shop will go through a Kubota for around 150 bucks or so. I think this would be money very well spent.

I would have to agree, if I were purchasing used I would have a dealer look it over even if it meant paying for it. I do this with any used vehicle and would be sure to do it with a used tractor. I have found quite a few 'good deals' that were lemons by doing so and saving me huge $$ later on!

The best advice I can give is to Take Your Time and Do The Research!

I spent months learning and researching before I purchased and I was going with a new tractor from a great dealership. I still drove and tested them half a dozen times and visited the dealership more than that. Purchasing used has a lot more risk, however it can also have rewards if it's done right. I know this as a former impulse buyer of large dollar items... :D

If your in a rush or don't have a lot of time to spend researching, purchase new, you still will need to do some research, however it should be easier.

Good Luck!
