Tractor
None... yet.
How can I convince my Dad that buying a used tractor isn't necessarily buying someone's headaches? He says that he has NEVER had any luck buying anything used, but I have never seen him actually buy anything used. Well, I take that back, he did buy me a used Honda MR250 29 or 30 years ago... and that was a good bike. Do any of you have advise as to how to ease his fears of buying a used tractor, not to mention advise that will help us make sure the used tractor is a good one?

Your dad might be smarter than you think. I have had the most luck buying tractors from the widow or family of a deceased owner. Many times folks dump tractors knowing that it will cost them some cash in the near future if they dont. This is not a problem with a new tractor or one that is being sold for a legit reason.

How many tractors have you purchased over the years from left behind family members?

How can I convince my Dad

That was all I needed to read. You can't and shouldn't try. When someone's made up their mind only they can change it. Since he has said publically he has never had any luck he's just going to be looking for a problem if he gets a used one. If by some chance you do change his mind and something goes wrong then guess who he's blaming? I'd steer clear of this one and let Dad buy a new one or if you do want to continue down this road just give him some general info and but make sure its his decision and his decision alone on a particular tractor.

Best way I can think of is for YOU to buy a good used one and let him see how much you like it and how you never have any trouble with it and then you can GIVE it to him as a Fathers Day gift sometime. :D

Your father could be right, but he could also be wrong. Tractors last for a long time. It's not like buying a used car. Talking with the owner can give a lot of insight on the condition of the tractor. I'm not saying that you should believe what all tractor owners tell you, but when talking you can get a gut feel if what he is telling you is truthful. If you have doubts, have an independent knowledgeable tractor person check out the tractor. If it's legit the owner should have no problem with someone checking out the tractor. Let your dad be in on the whole process. He might change his mind or you might find your dad was more right. This whole process might give you and your father a bond that you might not have had before. Enjoy the adventure.;)

forget the convincing part.. lets move on to application and budget.

what are you wanting to do.. what is your budget.

are you mechanically inclined and able to make small to medium repairs on your own, plus regualr and preventative maintenance. do you own a set of tools ( sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, various pliers, hammers and mauls and drifts.. etc.. )?

Like any other purchase, to be an informed tractor buyer you have to do your homework.

First, you need to think through the uses you think you have now for a tractor.

Then expand your time frame 5 years and figure out what new uses you might have.

Once you have your arms around these uses, then figure out the type and size of implements you'll need.

Now you're ready to consider the tractors that satisfy your needs (horsepower, 2WD or 4WD, gas or diesel, FEL?, hydrostatic or gear tranny, etc).

Finally, start looking for used tractors (dealers lots, eBay, craigslist, local classifieds, local auctions, estate sales, etc). You can get ballpark prices for used tractors by investing $20 for a copy of the tractor blue book.

Don't know what your budget is, but I'd recommend starting with used tractors less than 5 years old and less than 1000 engine hours. A 30-50 hp tractor diesel with 1000 hours is just getting broken in (assuming regular maintenance schedule is followed faithfully) and should be good for 4000-5000 hours before needing engine/tranny overhaul. You can find many late model used tractors whose owners have put less than 100 hours per year on the engine clock.

Good luck.
