So I’m not knowledgeable on trailers what so ever. Just upgraded my tractor and seen an old trailer from 1999 for $3,000 that is rated for my tractor/backhoe.
The guy is a farmer and the trailer has been used to haul hay and a 75hp tractor. Never had brakes, axle or suspension replaced. I’m surprised he’s used it for 20 years and never needed new brakes.
What do I need to look out for? I have a nice new trailer about 2 years old 18 foot, 5,250 pound pay load. I could probably almost come out even after selling it. My Tractor/backhoe weighs 6,700 pounds. Thank you.

If you purchase maybe wise to replace brakes, also look under trailer check metal cracks and welded joints...20 years.

I’d check to make sure the axels aren’t bent or springs or spring hangers damaged from overloading. Also check the tires for visible dry rot. I’d plan on spending about a hundred a wheel for new brakes.

Besides checking tires visually, find the date code. You may be buying tires right off.

guessing the trailer with that load has to have brakes to be legal on the highway.
I paid just over $3000 two years ago for a 18' trailer double axle 8lug wheels and 12 ply tires to match. also ramps. It will easily (and legal) carry my 6500lb mini-x.

Also if you are border line on max weight you can move the tractor forward on the trailer to have the truck carry some of the weight.

shop around...

That’s probably heavy duty enough for your load but not by much. I’d probably jack it up and spin the wheels and check for play.

You can tighten up the spindle nut and fix that. Even if it needs bearings that’s a cheap and easy job.

Brakes may have never been replaced because they were never hooked up.
