Rotary Cutter Using Bush Hog Rotary as Finishing Mower??

I have done this brush hog finish lawn mowing thingy. It will not look bad but it won't even be close to the quality of the cut as a good finishing mower. The finishing mowers these days have a lot more technology built in to them. Blade speeds are much higher, tunnel decks are so much better, indestructible spindles, wheels, and blades, and their ability do cut heavy and even wet grass without clumping is pretty awesome. This is in response to so many commercial mowers these days. A premium finish mower these days is very expensive. And worth every cent to me.

I would not run a rotary cutter designed for 540 rpm at 1000 rpm. I think this is either going to hurt the cutter or cause an accident.

You can try it with sharp blades and see if it's good enough to suit yourself. Most rotary cutter blades get so beat up it's a wonder they cut anything.

I've always been a strong advocate for the use of high-lift blades on bush hogs when used in "normal" conditions (for a bush hog....) When used as a psuedo-finish mower, high lift blades are just as important. I cut approx. 8 acres around my house and barn with a Bush Hog 286 mower equipped with OEM Bush Hog high lift blades. Quality of cut will rival the best finish mowers. (Type and length of grass plays a big part in the outcome)

I used a shredder as a finish mower for years and the shame was I owned a finish mower. A rotery cutter will not do the job a finish mower will, or visa versa. A finish mower cuts a better finished grass, period.
