Using Round-Up around trees?

I have poison ivy/oak growing up around a bunch of my trees. The ivy and oak doesn't seem to bother me, so I may go around and pull it off trees and then shot them with round-up. But my lazy side/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif was wondering if I could just go along and give them a good soaking while it's still on the trees.

Will the round-up effect mature trees if I spray the ivy that's attached to the bark? Oh yeah this maybe helpful...Most of the trees are live oaks, water oaks, pines and a couple of unknowns.

Roundup will not effect the tree unless you spray it on the green leaves. Even then it would take an awful lot to injure a mature tree. Roundup works best (to kill) on soft green plant material.

jyoutz, this weekend i'll buy some round-up and give it a shot. There not calling for rain anytime soon so I think I'll be ok. But if it's anything like me washing my truck, we'll have thunderstorms the next day.

Shorty, as a recently affected and E-educated victim of Poison Ivy I'll be the first to remind you of a couple things: Even people who "don't get it" can become sensitive with repeated exposures. Also, people like me who are already sensitive will get even more susceptible with more contact. And remember that even the dead plants contain the urushiol oil for up to 10 years. Finally, don't burn the plants whatever you do. The oil can travel in the smoke and be lethal to someone who is overly sensitive.

Good suggestion to not burn poison ivy.

I was never sensative to poison ivy until after I burned a pile one time. The wind changed direction and I became engulfed with smoke from the burning pile. I didn't think anything about it until a couple of hours later when I was itching badly over every spot of exposed skin. I'm lucky that I didn't inhale enough to cause any problems.

Rob&Kelvin, I'm going to try the round-up while it's still on the trees. And hopefully I 'll be able to just wack them up with my new trimmer mower when they die. I was going to do it this weekend but there's been a change of plans, maybe next week I'll get them.

thanks for the tip, I'll be a little more careful next time I burn. When I was clearing everything went to the burn pile. I'm almost done clearing now, and the only posion ivy/oak left is coming up around the trees.

I have found that Roundup is more effective on the grassy type of weeds. If your poison ivy is very old and has the woody hairy bark on it, I don't think it will be as effective. If it is young with lots of leaves it might work. I have found a broad leaf week killer more effective but the drawback is that it can kill trees too.
I think I would go ahead and pull it out of the trees and spray the new growth that comes back. Good luck and be careful.

I have to give about $40.00 a quart for Round up at Wal-mart. I went to a big farm supply ag-dealer yesterday and bought a gallon of Roundup Ultra from a bulk tank they had and it only cost me $39.75 for the whole gallon. I had to take my own container. ANY ONE USING A LOT OF ROUNDUP SHOULD CHECK THIS OUT!

yep it's the same here if we buy 205 Lt (44gal drum) it cost us about $7 kiwi per Lt ($3.50 USD) if i go into a garden shop or supermarket it's about $7 KIWI per 200Mls (1000Mls to Lt) it pays to shop around ,even get a few of ya mates to go in with ya buying a bigger contaner and spliting it down same thing with oils
