I am putting rear remotes on an L3400 HST and I have a question regarding the control valve choice.

From reading here I see that most recommend a Prince valve with a tank return port (has inlet, outlet and tank ports) like this one http://www.princehyd.com/Portals/0/products/valves/RD5000InstS.pdf

I have a valve from Princess Auto already (BLB Hydraulics model BM40) but it does not have a tank port. This means that it will vent through the outlet port and through the existing tractor circuit (3 point hitch). I don't see a problem doing this obviously if the 3pnt is raised while activating the remote (unlikely) then the hitch will be subject to low vent pressure until the remote is returned to center.

Has anyone used a valve without a tank return like this? I like the size of the BM40 (9 gpm) versus the 30gpm monster from Prince.

Cheers,
Mike

By "tank" do you mean Power Beyond?

As long as it is the last valve in the series, you will be alright. You are right about the three point.

Mike:

Check the maximum return port (also called tank port) pressure allowed for your valve. Since the TPH is downstream of your remote valve, when you activate the TPH pressure will build up in the line from the remote valve return port to the TPH. This pressure increase happens whether the remote valve is in neutral or is partially activated. In most valves, the return port is designed for a moderately low pressure (250-500psi) because the seals between the return core and the spools are o-rings. If you exceed the allowable pressure in the return port the o-rings are likely to be damaged and the valve will leak where the spools pass through the valve body and connect to the handles.

Power beyond, also called high pressure carryover, isolates the return core and ports from pressure created by activating downstream devices by providing a separate low pressure return path to tank. That is why a power beyond valve has three ports: "pump" or "in" to receive high pressure fluid, "power beyond" to carry high pressure fluid to the next valve downstream, and "tank" or "out" to carry low pressure return fluid from the device connected to the valve back to the tank.

Welcome fellow Canuck.

Princess Auto sells a optional power beyond sleeve for the BM40 series valve. Without it, your 3pt hitch will not work as it will be the last valve in series.

I investigated going with the Princess Auto BM40. I got the Prince stack valve eventually. No good reason why other than the fact that many others had already used it before and a stack valve is nice if you loose a spool.

By default the Prince SV valve comes with a relief valave which is another option on the BM40.

BTW - the BM40 valve is a lot smaller and lighter than the Prince SV valve - though I am quite happy with my setup.

Cost is equivalent even including shipping, UPS brokerage etc. I paid $400 for a 4 spool Prince with PB - taxes, UPS brokerage fee etc. all in.

If I were you, I would just pick up a relief valve and a PB sleeve for your BM40. They have them in stock at my local Princess Auto.

Take a look at my install on the last page of this thread if you are interested.

For those who deal with Princess Auto in Canada...

I contacted BLB in Italy regarding the use of their valve with power beyond; this was their answer:

In reference to your request please be informed that all our valves are prepared to accept a power beyond adapter.
You just need to buy the power beyond plug as a spare part in Princess Auto.
The power beyond plug is to be installed in the side outlet marked "T2" and it allows the continuation of the pressure line (in your case back in the tractor hydraulics).
Please note that you will still need to connect the upper outlet port (tank port) "T" to the tank because the power beyond plug separates the by-pass line from the tank line.
In this way, when devices downstream the BM40 valve are used, the max pressure in the power beyond line is the same as we ensure on the valve, say 3600 PSI.

I will post back when the install is done (probably one month) with any additional details.

Cheers,
Mike

Canoetrpr,
Thanks for the info, I posted my relpy (with BLB info) before reading the others. You are exactly right!

Good luck with your install Mike. Keep us posted on how it goes. Feel free to post or PM if you have a question as I have just finished installing the valve myself.
