Yeah, I know all of us like to talk about gas and diesel powered toys (I own a Kubota 7800) but I need help. The last few years of harvesting tomatoes, squash, cukes, has resulted in many broken wicker baskets. Typically the bottoms blow out or the handle rips off.

What do you guy / gals use? I am thinking of a removable padded insert in a stainless steel basket that can hold 35-40 tomatoes. I have searched the internet to no avail.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, I guess any kind of container works as long as it's strong enough to hold what you put in it, and you don't pile so much of things like tomatoes that you crush the ones on bottom. I just always used plastic buckets myself, usually 5 gallon size.

I use a bucket also, but I don't pick 35 to 40 tomatoes at a time. But a clothes /laundry basket might work for what you need. For picking sweet corn for the freezer, I use a duffle bag, and can easily get about 6 or 7 dozen ears in it, that might also work for cukes or squash.

Will the tractor bucket work?
Wheelbarrow?

Here a picture of the wife (yeah right) anyway this pretty lass is holding a webbed vegetable basket like the one that my real wife bought me some 6 years ago. Still looks like it is brand new and we use it quite a bit. I like the fact that you can fill it then hit the veggies with a garden hose to rinse them off and the water drains out the bottom.

To be truthful and old mesh onion sack will do the very same and for a lot less mone too.

PineRidge, that is exactly what I am looking for. Any ideas where to find one?

Check out this page , not as cheap as an old onion sack but several different ones look useful. I've ordered from them, not these items, and they seem like nice folks.
