I have a Vermeer TM700 disc mower and have been having problems with it. I have had to replace the discks in the PTO Clutch I purchased it brand new 3 years ago and have done it 3 times and it needs done again. Apparently the hay wraps up around the outside box and disc and then the clutch begins to smoke and scars the disks and after about 3 times of this they have to be replaced. I have mowed less than 300 acres total with this mower and it is getting very aggrivating I have always been told that Vermeer equipment is some of the top rated hay equip. but am failing to see this. I am mowing on nice level hay fields with no rocks, stumps and no cattle has run on this ground in at least 35 years and it has been worked and planted since then, I am mowing brome so it is not too tough. I use a John deere 2950 tractor pulling in low range 4th gear at about 2000 rpm. Any suggestions or solutions am at witts end.

The first thing that comes to mind is you may be running the mower too close to the ground on the 3 point. The cut hay should never be close enough to the pto to wrap around it? Ken Sweet

It actually is not getting wrapped around the PTO it is binding up around what some call the outside pumpkin on the cutter bar. Thanks for the suggestion. If you have any further ideas please let me know.

If I understand you correctly, the hay winding around the end rotor is slipping the clutch and burning up the slip discs? Ken Sweet

the punkin as you call it is not spinning fast enough .get a new slip clutch then run the tractor rpm wide open and drop down a gear.i believe that will fix it.the shaft drive mowers i have been around do not spin as fast as a gear mower,so they have to be run slower if the cutting is heavy.but according to my local vermeer dealer that mower is the best on the market.

 On what COWSKI said. In addition, be sure the the tip of the cutter bar is not dragging too hard on the field. May need to tighten up a tension spring on the mower and carry the mower higher on the 3 point will help. Ken Sweet

I had plugging problems on the outside cone of my disc mower (Kuhn) in very tall, thick Timothy that was really wet at the base of the plants. Stuff was so tall and thick that it wouldn't dry out - but, you gotta mow when it's time to make hay!!

Went with the 3 inch lift shoes that mount on the inboard and the outboard end of the cutter bar.

That was the hot ticket! Took care of 90% of the problem - slowing down and keeping the pto rpms up took care of the rest.

Guys this is a Vermeer Trailed mower and it balances different from a 3 point mower. This mower uses a dual torsion float sustem. If it is not adjusted evenly the outside can nose-dive and cause this wrapping problem. Go to the manual a adjust the float evenly. This should fix the problem. Also make sure there are no impact damage on the cone.
