Vermeer hands down. Heavier built, newer technology, less expensive, great company to deal with. You can drive to their factory and meet people face to face and watch things get built. I bought a bailer last year and have a new mower coming this Spring. Family owned so they care more about you than Wall Street.

If you are going to roll any haylage (50% moisture) I would definitely go with the John Deere. In my area, we put up mostly wet bales and wrap them (some weighing over a ton). The guys that have switched to John Deere have said they were very pleased with the balers dependibility. I have seen them take a tremendous amount of abuse and still kick out several thousand rolls a year. That is just the scoop in my area.

I did a lot of research on balers before buying my Vermeer last year. From what I understand Deere balers are built from expired patents from Hesston and Vermeer. The new design on the NH balers has had a lot of problems I guess.

Also, if your going to do a lot of baleage you should get a European built baler like the Vermeer one. American balers are made to do dry hay but can do baleage. European balers are made to make baleage but can do dry but not very well. If you do mostly dry but some baleage the American built ones will do just fine and that's what most people do in my neck of the woods.
