I'm trying to assemble a small power pack with an old Vickers V210 vane pump. I understand that there are two types of filters, an intake suction immersed filter or a return line filter. as per your expertise, could you advise me which type is adequate? I'll appreciate a short explanation, too.

If you can get all the returns from that system to return back to the same place, get a return filter and a strainer for the suction side of the pump. The filter will get almost everything before it gets to the tank and contaminates the rest of the system. The strainer will prevent possible big chunks from getting pulled by the pump.

If your system is like a tractor, where the returns don't go all to the same place which makes it hard to have a return filter that can catch all the return, you'll need a filter on the suction side of the pump.

First option is usually the best too.
