Shale is funny stuff. I have a couple places where a lump of it sticks up out of the ground but it's made up of thin sheets vertically oriented like in your video. It breaks into a million flakes near the surface but it's very tight deeper down where it hasn't weathered.

At my place I can never be sure if it is part of a big rock or ledge running at the surface. Just have to pull on it with the hoe and see if it wants to wiggle at all.
