Thought I would post some pics of the sickle bar pruner rig I made to go onto the New Holland T2410 tractor w/ SSQA loader. Sorry I didn't take pics along the way like all the good detailed guys on here do but it was all I could do just to get it built. I'll post better pics after she's been thoroughly tested on approx 8-9 acres of Muscadine grapes this weekend.

The cutter bar was made by Canadian AgriTechnologies Inc.

Wow, Nice Job! That is a very good idea. Is it hydraulicly powered off your tractor hydraulics or ????

Very nice job with this. This is a very nice cost effective solution for primary vine trimming method when compared to the much more expensive vineyard hedgers. Look forward to your "live" photos. .......Gary

Yes the cylinder runs off one rear remote and the motor runs off the second rear remote. 1/4 " line on the cylinder(ran it when I got the grapple rake). I ran 1/2" lines for the hydr. motor.

Sorry so late on the pics. Overall, I like the work that it saved me. Its a huge time saver. I'm a bit disappointed in its quality. I'll post a pic of the housing damage that occurred at less than 10 hours use. The manufacturer said I ran it too fast. I think the hyd motor is rated at 3.3 GPM. Instructions say dont run it so fast that knives are a blurr. I ran it at 1500-1600 rpm on my tractor. I have no idea how many gpm at that rpm that my new holland T2410 was putting to the motor but I know the knives were not a blurr. The hydr motor was run off 19' of 1/2 '' hose from the rear remote. I'm not finished arguing my point with the manufacturer that I dont think it was my fault but I'm sure they wont do anything in my favor about it. They also say I should have put a flow control valve in front of the hyd motor. They didn't say that when I told them what my tractor specs were when I ordered the unit nor does there instructions say if your tractor pump is rated at X you need a Flow control valve.

Anyway, the pruner did have the acreage with the housing like it is now without seeing any problems so I may just run it till it pukes.

Mine arrived this week.
I tried it out tonight for about a 1/2 hour.
I have a cedar hedge around my property and it seemed to work pretty well on that.
My tractor hydro pump puts out about 5 gpm so I shouldn't have any problems.
The blades don't go back and forth very quick but it has enough power to cut some branches that were about 3/4 to 1 inch diameter.
Did you have any luck getting the manufacturer to help you out?

Hi,
We sell this style of system over here for all the vineyards, you need a heavy duty cutter bar to do dormant cane's, a cutter like the one you have shown is only good for green trimming,
have a look at the ones on this page
Hedging Systems | Whitco Vineyard Equipment
these are the guys that make the ones we sell, the medium duty ones are good for green trimming, but the heavy duty ones are what is used for Dormant wood, along with trimming trees, bush's and anything else that gets in the way.

What you will find with the lighter duty units is, because of the amount of power required to make the cut you will generally produce a fair amount of heat, also the sap from the vines is a great anti-lubricant! so you need to make sure you keep greasing the cutter bar on a regular basis, (every 2hr of cutting!)

The hydraulic flow rate going into the motor is also very critical, you need to have a Flow / Pressure regulator in the line, to much flow and you will burn the cam out in no time, to much pressure and the motor will be cactus. They are operating a a particularly high force, so you need to get this right.
When ever we setup a new system we always stick a Hydraulic Flow & Pressure meters on the line to & from the motors, only way to know for sure the system is setup correct.

Done alot of these systems , single bars, Inverted L, Double row, probably most complicated was a 6 bar system, 2 Tops, 2 Sides, 2 Skirt's! all with hydraulic in-out, Up-Down, Tilt control! So any questions feel free to ask.
