Ah yes, the engines history. This engine was rebuilt less than 100 hours and as per 1950 engine oil recommendations has used a straight SAE 30 in summer and 10W in winter (20 degrees temperature, high elevation). A point in fact, that over night temperatures drop to below freezing for more than half the year.
But SAE standards have changed over the eighty (80) plus years. The standards have become more demanding. We know that a 10W30 is not a 10 weight oil with additives, and that the muliti grade has the same high temperature viscosity rating as the SAE 30.
Another thought , my tractor does not get above 160 degrees ( using a Raytek ST 60 infrared heat gun and the new Case water temp gauge). Possible the muliti 10W30 may not have the same viscosity at lower temperatures as the straight SAE 30. I should check the temp. vs viscosity graph for the Rotella and Chevron multi weight diesel oils. 15W 40 might be the best bet. I use that now in my C8.3 Cummins.
Soundguy, Patches, sixdogs ( you really have 6 dogs?) appreciate the insight and passing along your experiences, it is always food for thought.
