1951 Case Model DI
Ok, I looked thru the earlier posts but saw nothing to answer this question. Would it be acceptable to use a muliti weight engine oil (10W30) instead of the 1950 CASE manual's recomendation of "a good grade of SAE 30 " for summer and "SAE 10" for winter " ?

No one has insight or experiences with swapping to a multi weight oil in a vintage tractor? Any thoughts on possible damage?

Used 15w-40 year-round (North Florida) in the Ford (late 50's ~ early 60's) 801 diesel without problem. Dad finally gave the tractor to a neighbor in the 90's, still running but basically worn out.

Never had a manual for the 801, reasonable to assume a single-weight engine oil was specified...

Yes, 10W/30 multi-viscosity would be the proper modern oil to use.

I'm now considerning a 10w30 conventional diesel engine oil . Diesel engine oil is considerably higher in detergent .

Appreciate the responces. Thanks, dave

If the engine has had a recent rebuild, I would recommend it, but if it's been run for years with a non-detergent oil I don't think I'd recommend using a modern H-D oil

I surely wouldn't use 10wanything in an old tractor.. especialyl one made for 30w oil.

In all my old tractors I run either 30w.. or a 15w40 diesel rated oil. I do have one i run 40w in cause it has a bit of wear.

Check your oil pressure numbers.. If great op.. 10w30 might be ok.... check it though..

I would use a single viscosity HD oil and call it good. That engine was made long before multi-grade was the standard and the engine was built with different tolerances than today .
30HD in the summer and 20 in the winter with a magnetic heater if you ever want to start it.

Ah yes, the engines history. This engine was rebuilt less than 100 hours and as per 1950 engine oil recommendations has used a straight SAE 30 in summer and 10W in winter (20 degrees temperature, high elevation). A point in fact, that over night temperatures drop to below freezing for more than half the year.

But SAE standards have changed over the eighty (80) plus years. The standards have become more demanding. We know that a 10W30 is not a 10 weight oil with additives, and that the muliti grade has the same high temperature viscosity rating as the SAE 30.

Another thought , my tractor does not get above 160 degrees ( using a Raytek ST 60 infrared heat gun and the new Case water temp gauge). Possible the muliti 10W30 may not have the same viscosity at lower temperatures as the straight SAE 30. I should check the temp. vs viscosity graph for the Rotella and Chevron multi weight diesel oils. 15W 40 might be the best bet. I use that now in my C8.3 Cummins.

Soundguy, Patches, sixdogs ( you really have 6 dogs?) appreciate the insight and passing along your experiences, it is always food for thought.
