These tractors are getting more pricey but are by far the best value of any machine on the market.

Add Electronic ignition, a Blazer alternator, new rubber, fluids, paint, brakes, clutch and a general tune up and you have a machine that can outperform even a modern day compact in a few areas. They are enourmously robust. Old man Henry did a wonderful job with these units.

Clearly - if you are on a budget and need a machine - this is what to look for. If you have a need for a loader - you may want a NAA or 600 series or 601, 641. These units have commonly available Power Steering retrofit kits. Otherwise it is too hard to steer with a loaded bucket.

Try the "N Newsletter" for more info. on the finest vintage machines ever built. The 3 point hitch was first on these units and is the standard for todays machines.

Having owned a Ford 800 and presently a New Holland 3939 4WD, I agree that the old Fords are good utility tractors but I differ them being thr best tractor. There are other tractors of the period that were just as good and even better. For example the Oliver Super 55 had a six speed transmission and independent PTO and nearly 40hp. The 8,9Ns didn't even have live hydraulics. The MF 35 had six speeds and live PTO.
Both the S55 and MF 35 had the option of gas or diesel. The 8&9Ns had the flat head engine.

I also own a 1401 Yanmar and I wouldn't think of trading it for the 8N, 9N or the NAA.

I don't think he meant the be-all / get -all tractor.. just a good value vs price.. if you needed a medium to small tractor.

There were about 4 types of Auxiliary trannies installed in the N series tractors.. gave you under and over drives ( other ranges ) or reduced ground speed, etc.

The NAA had nearly 40 hp, and live hyds... a dealer kit also converted it to independent pto...

"" The 8,9Ns didn't even have live hydraulics. The MF 35 had six speeds and live PTO.

The N series had a kerosene version.. denoted in the serial number as 8NAN as opposed to just 8N..

"I also own a 1401 Yanmar and I wouldn't think of trading it for the 8N, 9N or the NAA. "

Each tractor has a use it is good for. For instance all the N's had draft controll.. great for plowing. And as good as that yanmar 1400 series is.. it lacks the weight or power to plow... the 9/2/8n pulled a 2 bottom plow.. the NAA pulled a 3 bottom plow... I doubt my 1700 would pull a 1 bottom plow very well, without constant attention to the lift controll to compensate for the lack of draft controll.

Again.. everything has a purpose.

I bought my 30something hp NAA for $ 2000 dollars... my yanmar was a bit more expensive than that...And that NAA is a bull.. it may be a gas engine.. but it is as powerfull as my NH 1920... just not as usefull.

The 9N/2N/8N may not be the greatest tractors ever built, but they are great tractors in their own way just because there are so many out there still. They are easy to work on and parts are so easily available. Heck, you can walk into NAPA and get parts for them. Until I can get a building put up, mine sit outside, and the 8N starts right up every time, even after sitting a month or two!

Do your tractor a favor and put up a shade structure for it. I just picked up a 1966 international cub, and threw up a 8x10 structure for it.. went up in 4 hours by myself.. and that included the trip to the store.. doesn't have to be fancy.. just 4 2x4's to go into the ground for corners, and then 2x4's for 4 sides, and then 1 or 2 2x4's as runners down the middle.. attatch some 5V roofing tin, and there you go. If ya want a wall or two, use the 16'x6"x1" fence boards and cut them down to size.. that's what i did...
The whole deal worked great... I added on to an existing shelter I used to cover round hay bales. Now it covers my extra tractor and the hay.. here is a pic. It is easier than you think.. and will add years to your tractors life.

When I first bought the property, I had absolutely no where to put it, except for hiding it back in the trees. I brought it up here in the summer, and then it made the 50 mile trip to my dad's barn last September. I brought it back up here this past Memorial Day and left it up here until Labor Day, when it went back down there for the winter. The house is done, and I now have my new TC18 sitting inside my attached garage. In the spring, I will hopefully be able to start on my pole building, where I will move the TC18, the 2N, and the 8N, plus my Ranger and the Club Wagon! Will it all fit? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif It think no matter how big I build it, I will still fill it all the way!

I just added another 8x8 section to a 'growing' lean-to type shelter that I have near my barn.. it currently has a 66 cub under it and some assorted yard tools.. I have a sneaking suspicion that it will have an allis chalmers CA under it some time tomorrow.....
Hope the tractor is comfy to sleep on!
