Vinyl Fence Question

Well, despite the current postings on this board, I'm going to say I bought them at Lowe's. It was a while back but I think they were less than $20 each.

I used a piece of #8 rebar to start the hole (mainly to see what was in the first 15" of ground) and then had a short piece of 4x4 to drive the post in. Watering the area before hand probably would have helped but since I didn't, I went through several chunks of 4x4 driving them in the hard ground.

The winds we've had this year have knocked down some very big fir trees and these shelters (x4) have held up.

How did you pound in the stakes? With a sledge?

$20+ per stake is expensive. But so is a PHD. I want to put up a HT fence around our land which would be around 5,000 feet. One problem I have is clearing the line to build the fence since this is all in heavy woods. The DR Mower, cane knife, and machete has cleared about 2500 feet. I would LIKE to have the whole line cleared so I could get the tractor in to do the mowing. Its not hard to do the mowing with the DR. AFTER its been cleared the first time. But to get the JD in there is going to mean quite a few trees are going to have to be cut down which is a lot of work.

I'm wondering if these stakes could function as the holding posts for a HT fence.... I might have to try on some smaller projects.

The stake vendor in my first post has a spud bit for jackhammers to drive these in. I was planning on renting an electric demo hammer (Hitachi, etc) and hooking up to a generator.

Dan, I did use a sledge with several sacrificial 4x4's about 10" or so. Now I only put 16 in the ground so that wasnt so bad, I'm not sure I'd want to run a 5000' fence using the same method.

As far as running a fenceline through the trees, I've still got to put one on the south side of my property and I will clear a path wide enough to drive the little tractor the entire length. I can reach all my fences with the tractor. Makes for easy maintenance.
