Visited Washington DC,.. two thumbs up!

My Wife and I went to D.C. a few years back and spent a week. That was defiantly not enough time to see everything we would have like to have seen.

Yep, a week is not even close. Three weeks is once-over-lightly. If you go, and you like planes, make sure you see the Udvar-Hazy Center. It's organizationally part of the Air & Space Museum, but located in Virginia, just on the south end of Dulles Airport. (That's pronounced, "dull ess", by the way.) It's not well known, but there is a balcony where you can look in the back hanger and watch museum staff restoring old planes. Really cool. The museum is free, but parking is $15 per vehicle.

Hard to believe it has been about 22 years since we were there with our children and still cherish the memories and experience. Agree with all your comments. We are blessed with a great nation.

mapper, your son and his trip. Helps to realize how blessed my family is as we celebrated our youngest's grand's 4th birthday this afternoon. Thanks for sharing. Kenneth

I used to travel down to Rockville in the 80s to see a friend. He used to take me on tours in Washington.

I was very impressed. A very beautiful city.

It's always nice when you know someone somewhere. Too bad he moved to California. Went there too. Interesting, but no thanks.

I live near DC, but I don't give tours. Lol.

I try to stay away from the city.

My son had a Make A Wish trip to DC when he was 11. We spent a week there and felt like we could have spent several more and still not have covered everything. On many of our visits to various museum locations we had personal guides from the Smithsonian accompanying us.
One evening the State Department Security Service took us on an "Evening tour of Washington DC", this was done in an official state department motorcade. The tour started around 5:00 PM, it was pretty amazing to find ourselves slicing through rush hour traffic at high speed between our visits to all the places they took us to that evening - Lincoln, Jefferson memorials, State Department (met C. Rice), Supreme court, Capital Building, and Whitehouse. At each place we were met and accompanied by the security services associated with each site. Each of the security services presented my son with their challenge coins, these are some of his more treasured items from that trip.
We remain forever grateful to the Make a Wish Foundation for this once in a lifetime opportunity they gave our child.

Your story touched me, thanks for sharing.
