I just installed Vista Ultimate on a machine with 3.0 GHZ CPU, 1 GB RAM and very old FX 5200 AGP video card. So far, noproblems. Anyone else try this new OS from MS?

Our chief EMS (energy management system) wizard at the utility I work for referred to Vista as "a virus masquerading as an operating system". I thought I would P my pants I was laughing so hard.

I would not consider upgrading until it has been throughly wrung out by others. From the updates I get for XP it appears this is still being wrung.

Best of luck to you. :D

I just read something today that said if you have your microphone on and your speakers on and your voice recognition on, someone could send you a sound file that tells the PC to delete all your files and then empty the trash! It can only do what you have permissions for, but if you are like most homeowners, you give yourself full administrator privs. so, very possibly, someone could send out a rogue sound file that tells your machine to make all files visible and then send them all down the dumper. Sweet mother of recycle bins, pray for us!!!

I just put it on my Dell XPS 2010 laptop (luggable  ). It had a fit with the bluetooth stack from Toshiba that runs the removable keyboard and mouse, but it now runs very well, actually faster than XP Pro. It does have 2G or RAM to work with so that may help :D. I won't put it on my home PCs that run my weather station or my Apache web server for quite some time because I expect issues with the strange software and daemons that I run on those machines. For those with normal box PCs I bet it installs and runs fine.

I heard the same thing. I will not turn on the mike so maybe I am safe??? :D

I just installed Firefox 2.01, works fine so far and Avast Home edition, which is a free AV software, works fine so far.

We have an odd problem at work where it seems to be very sensitive to IP packet size (MTU) - file transfers crawl over our dedicated VPN link to a remote office. MS helping us with this, but we'll see...

I just bought a new laptop a couple of weeks ago. It came with a free upgrade to Vista. I've ordered it and plan on installing it once it arrives. Since it doesn't have much on it yet other than the Toshiba stuff, Citrix, and Visual Studio 2005 it won't be a big deal if it doesn't work. Install the Toshiba restore DVD and I'm back to square one. Now on the desktop and the kids' laptop I'll won't be installing it there for a couple of reasons. First don't want to fight with either of those (not real sure if the kids laptop has enough video card to do it) and I know our desktop needs a new video card as it only has 64 MB of RAM. Second reason is I just bought the laptop. So my computer budget is shot for awhile - especially when you consider that to make things "even" the wife wanted new carpet for the living room and dining room.

The thing that bothers me is that the last desktop I put together myself cost ~$400 for the parts. I'm reluctant to then spend $250 for Vista. I think my next box will be Linux based.

I heard that there are some digital content problems with vista.. I.E. it will digitally protect your own music and pics for instance.. I heard from one guy that it wouldn't let him do some editing on his own files!! Is there any truth to this?!?!
