Trying to find the correct or interchangeable voltage regulator for the YM1601D. Does any body know of an after market voltage regulator that will be a direct fit on the 1601D? Or do I have to get the OEM one. The one on my tractor has fours wires going into the plug and one wire going into a separate relay for the warning light. I have tested the generator and it is putting out 30VAC at 2000 rpm. But the voltage regulator is not sending anything to the battery. Also the charging indicator light is now staying on with the engine running. It never came on until after battery went dead.

The voltage regulators for these things have been the subject of many threads. There is apparently no aftermarket part available. Some have had to replace more than one of them on the same tractor. Unless you want to build your own or swap the OEM alternator for a more modern one, you are stuck with the OEM part.

Check out this thread for an interesting conversion:

I recently lost the regulator on my 2301 but the alternator was putting out good voltage. The only replacement regulator I could find was about $80 and they seem to have a poor track record. I decided to install a Nippondenso racing alternator that I got new for about $109 and spent a few hours building brackets. This is an internally regulated unit so is a true 1 wire hookup. Works great.......

I've got a buddy that owns a starter, alternator, and fuel injection business. At one time (If I remember correctly) he told me a way to convert almost any charging system (alt driven) to use an old style ford voltage regulator. Now that you can get those in electonic vs the old point type this would be a cheap replacement. I'll ask tomorrow and see what I find out.

I'd be interested in any solution to this. My regulator's been out since I bought the tractor a year ago. I've been putting it on the charger about every 2-3 weeks myself. But that's a pain, and I've been too late a time or two (an even bigger pain).

I'd just buy the $80 regulator in a heartbeat, but that doesn't seem to be a long term solution.

OK, here's the scoop :D , according to my buddy you can install a late 60's to early 70's Ford Truck voltage regulator on any alternator with an EXTERNAL regulator. Here's how it's done.

1) Voltage regulator from a 1970 ford truck with 4 output pins.
2) F pin will go to the Field on the alt
3)S pin is to ignition switch (switched 12+ volts)
4)A pin is hot at all times (constant 12+ volts)
5)remaining pin can be carried to ground.

He uses this regulator on anything he can't find one for or in the event a replacement regulator is mega $$$$$$. He sells the super heavy duty electronic regulator for $18.00 (he does recommend this for tractor and industrial applications) plus shipping if you can't find one at your local parts house. Standard duty is ~11.00. Hope this helps someone.

Unless this model is different there is a problem using a generic reg from a auto. Yanmar alt don't have the bridge rectifiers in the alt, they are in the regulator.

Seems like this subject has been covered a number of times. Seem to recall being mentioned there is an older Datsun reg that does work.

If it were me and having charging problems, I'd swap out the alt & reg for a small auto model. Any auto alt will provide several times the output the stock setup does.

The first problem on my 2210 8 years ago was a regulator problem. Problem was it over charged the battery and one day without knowing I was driving a bomb, I was in the middle of my yard cutting grass when BOOOOOOM! Sounded like a piece of artillery going off! thank god the battery was in the nose of the tractor and not under me! what a scare. I had to do the charge the new batter every time unitll I found a regulator. At least my grass came back after a year or so of where the battery acid put a hole in my yard insead of me!

You are probably right on this one. You do have to turn the AC into DC to charge the battery. I ASSUMED the alt had a rectifier circuit built in. Does the charging post come off the alternator or the regulator? For this setup to work the charging post has to be on the alt.

More information on the problem,,,,

This problem started when the battery went south. Took the battery out and had it checked by a local auto parts store.. The battery was Okay and recharged. Put the battery back in and the charge light came on,,the light on the lower right side of the four warning lights. It would not go off no matter the rpm's. So I checked the generator and it was putting out 30 VDC at 2000 rpm's.. So I know it is working. But at the battery is getting nothing. Just the normal 12.86 +/- volts. So it looks like the voltage regulator is shot. I did not check the fuses, heard if the horn does not work then the fuse is blown and this fuse also runs the voltage regulator. (Had to work on the Ford tactor, it had a flat front tire,,and it was raining and hot in the barn)

So, after reading all I can find on this site I could change over to a one wire alternator syatem,,,that is if I can find one small that will fit in the small space.

Or would it be better to get the VR-522/WH-522 set from Hoyes and be done with this problem???

Does any body know if this voltage regulator can be gotton at a local auto parts store???

Thanks Frank
