Ouch.. hopefully the surge arrestor saved the expensive equipment.

Any idea what caused the surge? Lightning, transformer went bad….

Yeah hope it saved your equipment. I had one blow when a generator went crazy and put way too much voltage out. Even though it melted it did save my tv and equipment.
The smell doesnt go away too quick.
Have you found anything else damaged.

I hope that is all that was damaged. If so, I would chalk it up as a win for the surge protector home team.

All the best,

Peter

We had one at work several years ago, damaged some stuff, somebody dropped a tree on a power line. Anything with any kind of protection was ok, even if it was just a cheap power strip with a fuse.

A $45,000 Thomas organ at one of the local churches got fried due to a surge 10-12 years ago. They didn't have any surge protection on it, and were sweating until they got word that their insurance would cover a new organ. The organ company acted like it was some big deal to include a surge protector when the new organ was installed. o_O

Couple months ago the next town over had a transformer blow, nothing but old age. It fried nearly everything with a dc motor that was plugged in. washers, dryers, ac, fridges, freezers and even whole house surge protectors. Blew through them all. And it did this for a few hundred homes. Major damage for thousands. It was a clear blue sky, and I was sitting in autozone when it happened trying to check out.

People on facebook complained for weeks about how they needed all new appliances, dealing with insurance, etc. It was a mess. Since then there have been a half dozen other transformers that have blown in the area but not taking any appliances out that I know of. But still 12-48hr without power.

Unlike anything I've ever seen or heard of before. I was fortunately not affected. I don't know what I would do if something took out my stuffed to the brim 24cu ft freezer.
