I just found this site, I've been looking for a tractor, leaning towards a JD, but having trouble deciding on which one. I was hoping to come to a conclusion on which one before the current incentives expire on 5/2.
I have 18 total acres, with a new house and 6 stall barn. The land is about 10 acres of woods, that will stay woods, about an acre around the house and 6-7 acres of pasture.
I haven't fenced the pasture yet, but it will be divided into a 1 acre paddock, with the remaing 6 acres divided into 2 or 3 fields.
The pasture is fairly level, the woods are all on a hillside ranging from 12-13% to 25% slope.
I live in PA so I will need to clear snow off a 560 ft long, 16% grade driveway.
i imagine the mower will be used mainly for mowing the pasture. I have a small garden tractor from my old house to do around the house if the larger tractor is too cumbersome.
I would like to use it to clear some riding trails through the woods, as well as clearing the driveway in the winter.
The first few places i went were steering me towards a 4000 series unit.
The last place i went, all the salesman were busy so i ended up talking to a real knowledgeable guy that did many things at the dealer, plus has taken care of many properties.
He was steering me towards a 3000 series, with a loader and LX6 mower.
He said if the fields are only 2 -3 acres a piece the smaller tractor would be easier to get around, plus i could probably do the paddock and most of the house area as well.
I think that is probably true. However I worry about the smaller tractor not being able to deal with the woods, trying to push through for trails etc.
Also, while the pasture is level compared to the woods, it has some areas that are probably close to 10% slope.
My neighbor just bought a 4320 with a loader and LX6 and says the tractor does noticeably slow on the hills when mowing his pasture.
On the one hand i really trust the guy who was pushing the 3000 ehydro. He seemed very knowledgeable, and i don't think he, unlike the salesman i have talked to, really had an agenda.
On the other hand, I think?? I'd rather er on the side of a slightly larger tractor than I need than a slightly smaller one.
The prices i was quoted
3720 eHydro $ 20383
3120 eHydro $ 16258
regular loader: 3000, HD loader 3500
MX6 1690
I know this is a long first post, I am just an ex city boy who doesn't know much about tractors and needs some help!
If I should go with the 4000 series, say the 4120 or 4320, what would be a good price for those?
Thanks in advance,
JT
