Tach on 3840 is jumping around. I suspect the cable. Is there a practical way to lube or should I seriously consider replacement?

Don't lub the cable!!
I had a similar problem. I took the cable apart and found nothing wrong with it. The problem I found (and I suspect is yours) was dirt in the tach. Take the dash apart and remote the tach head. CAREFULLY blow the tach out. I believe you will find this will fix your problem. The clearances inside are very tight and small bits of dirt cause it to bind and bounce. My tractor is 14 years old and works like a charm now.
Good luck with it.
