I picked up my first Gravely walkbehind last year.

This past fri i added a few more :D (4 to be exact)

Index of /pics/Gravely

Is there a website that will help me decifer the serial numbers... im curious what
i got. <edit> found it Gravely Tractors - Links - StevenChalmers.com <edit>

I know 3 L's, 1 LI and my first (dual wheel) has no tag left :(

Of the 4 i picked up this past weekend, I was able to put gas in one of the electric starts, clean the spark plug, jump it off the tractor and it fired up after it turned over about 5 times :D road it around the property for about 10 min (on the sulky) and no smoke

im currently troubleshooting a PTO switch issue (doesnt want to shift via the lever) and get a battery for it, but other than that... It will get a good cleaning and mow some grass in the front ditch this week.

Looks like you'll have a lot of fun restoring and using those.

well... not all of them

i figure 2 can be running fairly quickly... perhaps a third....

but i figure 2 are parts tractors. and i dont need 2 or 3 of things so ill be selling some stuff once i get it cleaned up, serviced etc.

Looks like you've been bit by the Gravely bug, too.

I picked up an L model a few weeks ago. I hope to get it going so I can see what the classic Gravely walk behind is really like in comparison to the newer Kohler powered machines.

The rotary plow for these machines is a marvel to me. Mr. Gravely must have been a mechanical genius.

Make sure your high/low lever is in neutral before shifiing the pto.Check the bolt on the remote pto linkage for tightness. I prefer the pull start over the electric start. Mine used to start with one pull every time, no matter what temp. even 10 below zero with 5w20 oil in it

Benjamin Franklin Gravely was indeed a mechanical genius, and held many patents in both the tractors his company built and in photography equipment. You can read more here:

Thank you. I enjoyed reading that information about Mr. Gravely.

Fascinating story about Mr Gravely. This is the very embodiment of the word "vision" which, regrettably, most CEO's and politicians lack today. Fun to know that the machine has lived beyond the dream and idea of its inventor with a ton of devotees to the engine and implement combination.
