I seem to have some problems with a left over file in my system.ini
Google came up with ErrorKiller that did a FREE scan and found 250+ errors/problems.
Does anyone have any experience with ErrorKiller, the free scan indicated it fixed 18 but I still have a "bunch" not fixed. Download full program $19.95.
Hope this is enough to get some helpful suggestions.

Watch out for that type of software. Could be spyware! You can go to Microsoft's website and download their Beta versions of Defender for free. Spyware is a growing problem, and is harder to remove than some viruses.

Since you're running 98SE, you can use Spybot.

Those 'pop-ups' are B.S. I bet if you ran SpyBot S&D you would not have 250+ problems. They just want your $. The SECURITY TANGO website gives detailed step-by-step instructions {free} for a locate/kill/recover process that works great.

Also, Lavasofts' Ad-Aware is very good and is also free, don't know if it works with 98 tho. You should probably upgrade to XP SP2 either way..........

All of the above suggestions are great. My expirence is that not one solution is 100% all of the time. The best approach is to use two or three products. I usually use the SpyBot, Ad-Aware and the Micrsoft Anti-Spyware combo.
Of course like anti-virius software, these products need to be updated to be effective.
Goodluck. My wife one that I had to remove her hard drive from her machine hook it as a slave to mine (so that it wasnt a boot device) then clean it.
