I am looking to build something to drag around the pastures to level and distribute cow patties. I plan on something about 15 feet wide (to pass through gates). I have a 77 HP tractor. I have about 60 feet of 2 3/8's pipe and was considering 4 - 15 foot pieces inter-connected with 3/8 " chain. First pipe a solid 15 footer, then the remaining 3 pieces segmented. It would be nice if I could build something into it that would allow flipping it over and now roughing up or scratching the surface when I put down winter rye. Any pics or ideas.

how about a spike harrow, very easy to make with pipe, rebar and some welding

I think you'd need a large diameter roller witha cleaning edge on it. I don't think any small roller or drag will work. I would think cow pies would tend to clog a harrow and a small dia roller would just push them around. If there was something like that, the manure spreader would not be in use.

Kinda sucks when the dung bettles go dormant. Cowpies everywhere.

I've got a buddy that took a piece of pipe (wider than the tractor) and attached a large piece of chain link fence to it. He then attaches several old car tires to the fence for weight. You can't even tell there were cow patties there when he finishes.

I had a friend that got a 15' length of railroad track, burned a hole in each end for a bridle hooked a section of chain link fence behind it and dragged it all over his place. The weight of the rail leveled spots and moved all the cowpies.

You might want to look at a machine we often sell for that job. There are several companies that build what is called a flexible tine harrow. They are simular to a chain link fence that has prongs welded on that depending on how it's attached will give varing amounts of aggressivness. They build them small enough for four wheelers and they also build larger ones that can acutually be lifted off the three point hitch for ease of transporting.

Yeah. Around here they are known as 'pasture rakes'. Picture a regular spike harrow with the bars connected only with chains and the spikes on steroids. Does a great job. Got a truck? My neighbor has his kicked into a fence corner and it has been there for the past 15 years at least.

I used a welded wire cattle panel with 2 old rear tractor tires on it. Chains from each corner to drawbar. Worked really well. Cheap to make.

Some of the pastures around here, cow patties just turn into fireant mounds.
