In this http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/trailers-transportation/241328-plywood-truck-bed-sides.html thread I detailed my building of a ladder rack.

Now I want to put a hoist on the back. I'm thinking of replacing one of my rear uprights

with a steel column and the crossbar with the horizontal piece for the hoist.

What sizes column/ horizontal piece would I need to be able to hoist a ton?
I'd like to be able to fit it down in the stake pocket.

I realize inherently that I can't suspend a ton at 5' (about width of bed) but I would like a "boom" length of a few feet.

Any other "out of the box" thoughts?

Dual booms?

There is a company that makes one that fits in your 2" receiver and goes from there. I can not remember the name of the product though

The HF crane was to give you an idea of what was designed to lift 1/2 of what you are asking. The HF style crane is only 1/2 ton capacity and has a reputation of bending beds if used at capacity unless modified to be frame mounted through the bed.

I don't think a hoist with a 2 ft arm and one stake pocket post would lift more than a couple hundred pounds without turning your stake pocket horizontal.

Using two posts and a cross beam would hold a lot more, but I doubt you can hoist anywhere near a ton on anything mounted only to the bed sheet metal.

This is one idea using the hitch and a support post for strength, but is only 900 pounds capacity.

This arrangement goes up to a ton, but is using a heavy frame-mounted bumper as the crane base.

Here is a one ton at about 3 ft crane:

And the way it mounts is attached below.

Newbury - At one time I considered a similar idea for much smaller payload and came across the Spitzlift mentioned by one of the previous posters. What I thought was a good suggestion by a forum member was to consider a lift gate instead. You would have safer control of the load when moving from ground to bed level. Not sure if there is a used market for lifts out there that might make it an attractive alternative.....Gary

Thanks for the info guys. What I really had in mind was beefing up the vertical mast on my ladder rack, including running it all the way to the floor of the bed. Then have a support under the bed that would run to the ground.

I realize putting 1 ton on one corner of the bed without lots more support is asking for trouble.

I was thinking of having the boom as part of the horizontal cross bed piece.
Spitlift specs a boom:
The Boom shall be formed from 1 piece of 3/16" ASTM A572 Grade 50 High Tensile Steel.
and their boom has a crosspiece for further support.
