I have 25 acres in Northern Michigan. My soil is mostly sand and rock so I can't grow crops other than cactus. Most of my land is wooded, but we are selling quite a bit of timber this fall and I have about 5-6 acres cleared now. I'd like to raise cattle, but don't think I have enough land for grazing to make it worth while. Is there something else I could raise that would be worth while financially, ie alpacas or something? I don't like the idea of goats, but maybe sheep or something.

Just looking for ideas as I have never done anything like this and feel it's time to do this and get my children involved.

Thanks

Cattle are a no go on those acres... many reasons.
Sheep or goats are clear possibility... if it is for kids, check with local 4H and/or FFA for programs for your kids... get them involved and get whatever they like. Sheep and goats are small enough for them to be able to handle and don't typically injure kids too bad. Pigs are not going to work. Chickens are possible. You will need shelter for any critters you get and remember they will need water and feed daily...even when it is snowing and below zero... be prepared to do that... I think sheep would be more hardy in your area than goats. Existing fences and water sources may be a significant decider for you as to type of livestock.
