Thanks to all who might look and respond to my question,

I have a Smith and Wesson, Model C Rifle in .30-06 w/HVA 1900 action -- I bought it years ago for a Western hunt that never came to be. Fast forward to today, I now have a hunting use I want to press this rifle into service for and would like it to be scoped.

So, I'm wanting to purchase scope, rings, and bases through Amazon to take advantage of the no interest if paid off within the special financing period. That being said, I can't seem to find the correct base set on Amazon that I want, in Matte finish.

Based on Warne's lookup page from their website, it says that I'm in need of the combination: M898828M (for Matte black) - M898/828M - Warne Scope Mounts

When searching on Amazon, this is how Amazon describes them,
Mauser 96 Small Ring Mat 2Pc Base by Warne

My problem is this. I can't find that exact part number on Amazon. I DO find: M898829M - which should be Matte finish (but pics Amazon shows look more like stainless to me)

I have several questions:
  1. Does anyone have some kind of link or actual literature that gives actual specifications to a given part #?
  2. Can those two sets be used interchangeably, being only 1 digit apart on the last number?
  3. Do the numbers represent the thickness/height of each base piece?
  4. If the pictures is right and they are silver in color, what method would you use to make them into a black, matte finish?
  5. Total flyer, anyone shooting with a Vortex scope? (Looking at Diamondback or D-back/HP -- Love some feedback. I've read a lot on them, and they seem to have quite a bit of positive feedback.)

Again, thanks to all for your help...

M898/828 - Warne Scope Mounts
Maxima M898/828 Fits Mauser Small Ring 96 Altered
This probably means with the clip slot hump removed. This would also apply to a commercial receiver made to the same dimensions, without ever having a clip slot.

M898/829 - Warne Scope Mounts
Maxima M898/829 Fits Mauser Small Ring 96 Unaltered
This probably means with the clip slot hump intact. It has a relief cut in the bottom front of the rear base. Doesn't show in the Warne photo. Could be used on an altered rifle but would leave a gap under the front edge.

bcp,

Thanks for helping to clear up my confusion over the part #'s for me.

You are correct. My action would be considered 'Altered' due to the lack of the clip slot. I had to do some searching to find out exactly what that meant. Once I'd found that out, I was curious how it was used. YouTube helped out on that one. Scoping a rifle with that feature kind of negates its handiness, if so equipped - I digress.

Anyway, since it only seems to be a cosmetic issue for me, I think I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger on a 'clip' version of the Warne scope bases. If I decide I really don't like the aesthetics, I can always find the correct bases locally.

BCP, once again - thanks for clearing up that matter for me.
