NEW HOLLAND TN75S,KUBOTA z121,KUBOTA KG222
I have a New Holland TN75s fitted with Pirelli branded TM700 tires and thought I should post a word of warning re these tires, which I consider to be the absolute worst agricultural tires known to man. In spite of my machine (which is not fitted with a FEL) having hauled nothing more than a slasher, the tires being kept properly inflated and the machine and being parked in a concrete-floored lockup shed every night, the TM700 tires repeatedly develop massive, deep radial sidewall cracks. This is particularly prevalent when the machine has to be left parked overnight on a hillside, and the only possible explanation I can see is that the rubber compound used to make the tires is either too soft or lacks structural elasticity.

In light of the cost of these tires running at more than $2000 each, I initially thought that this was an isolated problem and responded by fitting tubes to both rear tires, but the problem continued unabated with the number of sidewall cracks multiplying to the point where in spite of having less than 50% wear, I now need to replace both rear tires. Note that we are not talking hairline cracks here, but gaping chasms up to 10cm(4") long and over 1.3cm (1/2") deep which are not related to any impact with sticks or foreign bodies, but just as a result of structural failure of the tire sidewall.

I emailed Pirelli Customer support about the problem and initially received no response at all, then about a month later, I received a message from a product manager from Pirelli, who informed me that the Agricultural tire Division of Pirellli had been sold off to Trelleborg some years ago. He informed me that Trelleborg had also been forwarded a copy of my email and inquired as to whether I had received a response from them - which I had not. To date I have still received no response from Trelleborg, whom after speaking to a local tractor mechanic who has encountered this problem numerous times, I believe may be well aware of this problem.

In light of now being faced with a bill of around $4000 to replace two tires, I thought I would share this experience with other potential Pirelli/Trelleborg victims and can assure everyone that in light of my treatment, there is not an iceberg's chance in **** of me ever buying another Pirelli/Trelleborg product.

What trouble does the cracking cause? Do the tires not hold air?

I've always been under the impression that the exterior side wall rubber was just to give a place to mold in the names and numbers.

The tires on my Fordson Major are over 40 years old and have been checked and cracked all the while, I've experienced no troubles because of it. Perhaps you will not either.

These are deep cracks and yes, they are so deep that they render the tires incapable of holding air. Even with tubes fitted, which get damaged as the result of being pinched and perforated. I had a 1964 Fiat 411R which never exhibited anything like this - the "cracks" in these tires are more like massive sidewall splits.

And then there is the other tiny 800 LB gorilla sitting in the corner.....................WHERE WERE THEY MADE?????? Whenever I see cracked tires of any sort I look for that "Made IN CHINA " label. These days I won't touch anything rubber or plastic that I can help if it comes out of that place, period. To do that completely is impossible now days but in the case of expensive things like tires 100% . Don't think because it's a US company name it means its made here either. That's not to say everything rubber outside the US / Canada is trash, far from it. China:thumbdown: on the other hand, well the cracks speak for themselves.

OK You are dismissed! The fabric of the tire construction does NOT permit air leakage through a tube and tire wall due to sidewall cover cracking.

Get over it.

Jeesh!

The Carlisle Trac-Loader R4's on my Kubota all started cracking in the sidewalls. I was also concerned because the Carlisle Badlands on my Polaris did the same and started leaking.
So I emailed Carlisle, they asked for pics. As soon as they got the pics, I got 4 brand new tires free of charge shipped to my house.

Great company to deal with.

CalG, do you have money burning a hole in your pocket? If the sidewalls don't stay together a tube is only as good as the rest of the tire. Deep side wall cracks can cause damage to the sidewall cords. I think I'd be going to the Trelleborg/Pirelli dealer and getting them involved. If they are any kind of a reputable outfit they will help you to bring the issue to Trelleborg. Unless these tires were used in some kind of severe environment, they should be covered by a manufacturer defect warranty. If you can find out names of others who experienced the same thing will be a great help. I'm sure Trelleborg doesn't want a class action suit for defective tires.

Alright ... I have to ask ...

Isn't $2000 per tire just a little insane?

What does money have to do with it?

Checking and cracking in the side walls does not cause tubes to leak ! Side wall checking can NOT cause damage to side wall cords. How do you get to that? Myth?

As I wrote, Tires last a long time after the first checks appear.
