All y'all in the eastern states might be interested in this recall of ground beef. It affects NC, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, and most all states bounded by those. Don't want you guys (and girls) losing any seat time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

FYI, I was in the restaurant business for 20 years. I would never eat a hamburger from a restaurant that was cooked less than medium well, and I like mine rare! In my opinion, unless you know for absolute sure that the ground beef is fresh (there is no such thing anymore, unless it's a very small, old fashioned butcher), do not cook your burgers less than medium. Butchers will say its ground fresh but I guarantee that what they mean is that it's reground fresh. They get it in big tubes that can be up to 30 days old and when you first open it stinks to you know what. Then they regrind it and it has chemicals in it that cause it turn from the brownish purple it is back to red, looking deceptively like fresh and smelling a little better but still not like fresh. It may be fresh, but you would have to know when it was orginally ground to know. Most is delivered more than a week old! Hope I haven't ruined anybody's appetite. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Being in the HVAC business you would be surprised at how dirty some kitchens are in the restaurants. There is places I absolutely would not go into for anything less fixing something.

I still like the old restaurants were the kitchen is right out in the open and you can see everything going on.

Just got arond to reading the post.

what's interesting to me is that the meat was "produced" in January and the FDA did the recakk on March 11 & 12.

Who are they kidding - real old meat or all eaten already!!

Yes, you have. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I read your post to my wife and she was equally disgusted. We both agree that hamburger meat often stinks. Now we know why. Sounds like the local butcher may be where we will be buying our burger meat in the future. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Well, Chris, I sympathize, but turns out my best friend's wife is a health inspector. Now I can't eat in most of the restaurants in the county. As to ground beef, there I have it lucky. The "meat lab" at the local university sells the best hamburger I've ever had. So lean I sometimes have to add some oil to it if I want to fry it quickly. It's always frozen right after grinding, but it's in neat little bags that are easy to store and thaw. I still wouldn't eat it raw, but I have no problem with my pink-in-the-middle half-pound burgers.

Chuck,

Maybe someday I will be able to grow my own beef. Then I know I would have fresh meat. Even that would have a downside, though. My wife loves beef as much as anyone but I know she woulf not eat Bossy or Elsie after raising it from a calf! Heck, after raising it and fattening it she probably wouldn't even let it leave the pasture to be butchered!

I know a county nurse and a propane gas delivery person both of them have ruined restaurant eating for me. I am always happy when I can get 2 or 3 deer each season. I make sausage and ground for a year. The local store is almost giving away the irradiated ground meat here as no one will buy it, plus it is about 50 cents a pound more.
