I am helping a friend out. The JD 455 went into the pond Seat Deep. We got it out, did not start it. We changed the oil and took the Glow Plugs off. We sprayed WD40 in the three cynlinders and cranked it. Then we sprayed more in and am leaving it sit. Now the issues:

1) When we got the nut over the "Banjo" it broke the Diesel Return Rail. We will be replacing the rail, hoping the dealer has one in stock. They seem to be a weak point in there is no way to hold the banjo and break the nut loose. Now, do we repkace all the sealing washers. One seems to be special as it hs 2 small holes in it so it could get pricey.

2) Are there 2 sealing washers (one under the cup and one between the cup and Glow Plug) that is in the head? When we turned the engine over 2 of these cups flew out! We could not get the third out.

3) How do we hold the banjo so it will not turn when we put it back together?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If your "sealing washers" are copper, they can be annealed & reused (I do it all the time with banjo-bolt washers in brake systems on my old Mopars with disc brakes). You'll need a reasonably hot flame, & cup of cold water. I use the gas cook-top stove as my heat source. With pair of small needle-nose pliers, screwdriver, or even a bent metal coat hanger, suspend the copper gasket in the top of the flame until the copper glows a dull orange-red, then simply drop it in a cup of cold water. This softens the copper so it'll seal as it was intended.

HTH!

How? Well. they wanted to cut the grass closer to the edge. They drove down the slope front first. Figured with four wheel drive should be able to get the front wheels close to the edge. Press the go back pedal (HST) and it would not go back up the hill, stopped in the middle of the hill. Not sure what happened next. I think the brake slipped while he was off evaluating the situation and it went right in. When I got home I saw just the seat in the water. I got my tractor out (Blue, TZ25) and pulled it out. My wife said after all was said and done I should have taken a picture.

I will print out the suggestion on the sealing washers as the bottom sealing washers have 2 small holes in them so I assume they would be special order or expensive.

Just for the record, why would 4WD be a help here? To the best of my knowledge my 455 could never have been ordered with 4WD. That wasn't available until the newer X500 series. And yes, not much hydro power in reverse for an as manufactured by Deere 455. Maybe something to do with safety when mowing?? That's probably why folks are bidding up crazy prices on Ebay on modified after market reverser pedals. Anyway, none of this info helps you bring the 455 back to life. Others here are much more useful on that. Good luck.

Finally somebody did the same thing I did, and admitted it!
I was filling a shallow pond using a 5' box blade behind my Ford 1100. When I would get too close to the edge and fell in, I would just drive across part of the pond and come back out in a straight line. One time the box blade got hung when I dropped off the edge. I tried and tried to get it out to no avail. A neighbor with a brand new Toyota p/u came over and hooked to the uprights on the boxblade after I disconnected so he could pull it out of my way. The uprights broke off and followed the rope till they ran out of steam, against the leading edge of the hood. YIKES! I got a comalong and hooked it to the tactor and pulled it out so we didn't tear anything else up. I had heard something pop when I hung the front wheel up so I knew I had problems.
The pond was only deep enough to reach the bottom of the steps by the time I had to go into it the first time.
The little ring gear in the hub had disenergrated and was no longer available. I bought the whole upgraded knuckle to get it back together. The things we have to learn the hard way.

There is another issue, other than the pedal, that affects the reverse
performance of this line of tractors. The bracket that holds the pedal
linkage under the foot pedal has a tendancy to droop, or sag, and even
sometimes to the point that the reverse pedal will hardly work, let alone
trying to back up a hill. I'm sure the aftermarket pedal will work, and give more travel to the reverse pedal, but if the bracket under the floorboard has
sagged down, you can regain your reverse performance by either prying the
bracket back up, or I've seen them weld them near the frame to keep it up.
This brings the pedal back up thru the floorboard higher for more pedal
travel.

Finished and it started. It is an X595 not 455. The Diesel injectors had to primed by loosening the pipes hand tight, turnig the engine and pumping on the Fuel Pump lever. They bought new sealing rings for the Injector to Cylinder. Thanks for all the input. No damage appears to have been done at least Tractor Wise!

Jag

my statements about the foot pedals aren't applicable with the
X series tractors... oh well

I would hit every grease fitting, in the front end, and the u-joints on the
drive shaft going to the transmission with a good shot of fresh grease, and change your transmission oil and filter, in case water got in thru the vent. but it sounds like you made out ok.
good luck! and keep her on the dry side!
